ROTTERDAM (still) Day 88
We began our day again with another massive breakfast and filled our pockets with as much as we could for our lunch and dinner later. We decided it would be useless to go back to the port when planes still aren’t flying so there would be no way anyone would have cancelled spots on the ferry. Instead we went for a walk around the town to check some things out. As we walked we passed the market where an old man was dancing to some jazz music as he tried to sell his old records and random bits. From there we went to the shopping street with lots of stores unfortunately we both were not in a mood to spend more of our money. Next we came across the random and strange statues around Rotterdam. First, there was the giant gnome that is holding a butt plug and then a bronze puppy with a bronze poop next to him, very strange.
We went to have our stolen breakfast for lunch along the wharf. After filling our bellies again we headed back to our floating cubes to watch a movie on my laptop. After the
movie we went down to get our free pizzas.
We asked at the bar for our pizzas and showed him the little voucher that the manager gave me. He looked at it and then said ‘oh I heard about you! Don’t worry any time you want water you come find me.’ I must say the pizza was really delicious, mine was a spinach pizza. After dinner we head back up to read our books and meet our latest onslaught of nutter roomies.
And, Jennifer heard from her friend stuck in Tenerife and she somehow got to Spain but from there the earliest flight she could get back to London is APRIL 27!!! She is stuck in Spain for 10 days. And it’s not like she can just try to hop on a train or bus and get up to Amsterdam to ferry it because she has a husband and two small kids with her. What on earth do you do in that situation? Told you can not leave Spain for 10 days and have to lose 10 days of salary at work and incur more costs. I just can’t fathom what is going on inside of her mind.
I am furious enough by the fact that I have to wait 4 days to get across to London. There have been a whole lot of ‘wow this is nuts’ moments in the last 48 hours. Damn volcanoes!
ROTTERDAM (still) Day 89
Today is a sad day. My commiseration friend is leaving me for her ferry home. Who will I sing crazy songs with, who will I vent with, who will I watch movies with? I went with Jennifer to the ferry to see her off because really I had not much else to do. I made my way back later and spent the day in bed reading the fabulous book I bought the previous day.
I have been really lucky with the books that I have been trading off at the hostels. They all have been really good reads. One was a book called ‘Kushiel’s Dart’, which I picked up in Vienna and read while in Italy. I really enjoyed it and found out it was the first in a series of books. Since I gave my book to Jennifer to read on her ferry I needed to buy a new one so that
I could trade it off at the hostels in the UK, when I finally get there. I decided that if I could find the next book in the series, in English, I would buy it for my ferry crossing. Unfortunately, I think I bought it one day to early because I started it and then couldn’t put it down and now have finished before I have even stepped foot on the ferry. Oh well it was too good to wait for.
THE ENGLISH CHANNEL Day 90
YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Can I even begin to explain how freaking happy I am to be getting out of The Netherlands. I was dying to get over to the UK since things began to foul up in Sweden. And then I arrived in The Netherlands with no intention of staying longer than a few hours to wait for a ferry and then this insanity ensued and I found out I had to be here for 4 days. Well I am literally ready to burst with excitement. Hopefully things will actually go better once I get across to the UK and this shite for the last week and a half is behind me. Although,
I am slightly worried about my flight back to Canada; I know it isn’t for many many many days still but they say the volcano hasn’t actually finished all its nasty business so it may erupt again between now and my flight and may cause this situation too begin all over again, which really I don’t think I could handle it. So everyone back home pray that the volcano goes quiet until after I am back home again or who knows when you will ever see me again.
I was reading The Star online the other day and they had their picture dedication to the Volcano disruption and one of the pictures is of the insanity at Hamburg train station. Well guess who was some where in that crowd of heads waiting to jump on a train. That’s right folks; I am one of those people. I was there that day at that time!
