And we are back!

Lenin and I have decided to make Mamita's kitchen floor cement, instead of dirt. In order to do this we had to have sand delivered and buy bags of cement, illegally, I might add. And then we had to excavate the kitchen to make it level, which is what Lenin and I did all day yesterday. He used the pick to break up the dirt and I shoveled into the wheelbarrow and he went to unload it. So really, he had the brunt of the work.... but then again I spent hours that morning washing our clothes... so it all works out.

Lenin went to work this morning, gets back tomorrow morning, at which time we shall make cement and lay the floor. And there will be photos of that, too. By the way, my work shirt is illegal, too. Just all kinds of illegality abounds.

ALSO my post that goes with the wedding planning, but I'm putting in this post...

Cake! Pastel! Queque! Torta!

Panaderia y Reposteria Edith Bellorin, Somoto, Madriz 2722-2076

Lenin and I were walking down the street in Somoto, actually looking for a jeweler to see about wedding rings, when we came upon a reposteria, or a baker, the Panaderia y Reposteria Edith Bellorin. I popped in for a second to ask if they did cakes, like wedding cakes? The girl told us to sit and the owner, Edith, a middle aged Nicaraguan, came out.

I don’t know how cakes are sold in the USofA, but here it is paid for by the pound. I still am not sure if it’s the weight of the harina, the flour, or of the batter…. but Lenin knew what to ask.

We looked through books to find a style that we liked and we talked about prices and flavors and whatnot. Actually, I told him I didn’t particularly care about the style. A wedding cake is a wedding cake, so I let him have the say in the style…. as long as it was light blue, and I like the idea of the cala flowers.

So! We have a three tiered round cake. The bottom two layers are pegados, stuck together? and the top layer is set upon greek column things. I already bought the bride & groom that go on the top, like forever ago, in Esteli.

So three layers, celeste frosting with white cala flowers, or callow lilies. It’s vanilla with chocolate filling.

And it will be four pounds. Of what, I don’t know, but it’s a decent size.

And guess what it cost? I have NO idea what wedding cakes cost in the US, but this cake is 330 cords per pound. It would be 300 per pound, but we wanted chocolate filling.

330 x 4 lbs =1,320 cords or about $65 dollars. We put some money down, she wrote down everything in a big ledger, including page numbers of the books and every tiny detail and our names for the heart in the middle… and yeah!

After that it was getting late and we were too tired to hike down to the jewelers, so we shall save that for another day. But we have a cake ordered! One more step…
