ATHENS Day 59

I decided to ignore my alarm this morning and sleep a little late after a not so restful night sleep on the ferry. When I finally got up I decided to take a slow day and walk around Athens but saving the majority of sightseeing for the following day, being Sunday, when all the sights are FREE. Like they always say, ‘why pay today for something you can get free tomorrow’ or I totally just made that up, but I like it.

I found myself in the city park that happened to have a turtle pond. It was so full of turtles. After watching the turtles slowly move around the pond I headed for the Temple of Olympian Zeus, which was the largest temple of its time with some 200 or something pillars and over 700 years to finish. It looked amazing but on the verge of closing so I had to peak through the fence instead. Outside of the temple remains is Hadrian’s Arch, which was the old separation Arch of the new and old (or old and older) city of Athens. New being the post Hadrian time and old being the pre Hadrian time.

I headed back to Plaka, where my hostel is, for dinner. Mmmmm souvlaki and greek salad. Did you know that the actual greek salad doesn’t have any lettuce in it? It is actually just cucumber, tomatoes, red onions, feta, olives, olive oil, and spices. I could live off of greek salad it is just so very good.
