Nope, cannot keep away from the training. I am feeling better and also the infection is now clear so I set off for the Jiu-Jitsu session. It is already really hot, despite only being 8.45.

I actually cope with the session much better than I expected to. It finishes with the class tournament and I lose my first match fairly quickly, ending up with a painful elbow. For my second match I am up against a guy who is pretty tall and about four times the size of me (or that’s what it feels like!) My face visibly drops when we stand up and face each other. The referee remarks that it is an ‘interesting situation’ and tells us to go ahead. I manage to put up a pretty decent struggle (well, he overpowers me pretty quickly but I do manage to get up a couple of times and avoid his attempts at arm bars) and the fight lasts longer than I expected it to before he beats me. That is more than good enough for me.

In the afternoon I am off to the visa office to have my visa extended. I don’t like visa offices (who does?) and am not looking forward to the visit. However, it goes smoothly and within half an hour of walking into the office, I’ve manage to make copies of my passport, have passport pictures taken and have the visa stamp on my passport. Whoah! No queues for visa stamps - something I could get used to. On the way back I see a temperature announcement and it is 40 degrees. No wonder I am feeling slightly toasty … I have been told it is unusually hot for this time of year.

I’m off to Promthep Cape this evening, which is famous for its sunsets. Today is a particularly busy day, with lots of coaches parked up. However, it is easy to find a space from which to view the sunset, which is beautiful and a great way to finish off the day. There is also a great elephant shrine in the area. The tradition is to pray at the shrine and if you do receive good luck within the next few days, you return with the image of an elephant and place it at the shrine.
