Acapulco's Cliff Divers By Day . . .

One of the “must see” things in Acapulco are the cliff divers. A group of local men climb cliffs up to 130 feet high and then dive into the water below. They dive into a small channel that is quite shallow considering the heights they are diving from. But they’ve been doing it for decades and they do multiple “shows” every day for people who come to gather on the cliffs to watch.

Two cruises ago, when Aunt Renee, Uncle Allan and Kelsey were cruising with me, we went to see the divers at night. Today, after some last-minute scrambling with tours, I went again with Melanie (my sister) and Andrew (her boyfriend), but this time for the afternoon show.

We walked down the long staircase that winds down the cliff until we got to the bottom viewing area - about 30 feet above the water. The sun was beating hot - thankfully an ice cold beer was part of the ticket price!

Then the divers made their way down. They jumped into the water, swam across the small channel and began scaling the cliff - with nothing but their speedos! Then the “show” began. Six of them jumped, dived, flipped and soared into the water below. I’d seen them do it before, but it was still awesome to watch.

After the show the divers were gathered outside for photos. Of course Mel and I posed with them!

We headed back to the ship area and had a bit of time before our late afternoon tour. So I took Mel and Andrew to my favourite local restaurant. They have organic food, really healthy, with lots of vegetarian items, plus smoothies and fruit mixes and great drinks. I eat at this place almost every week in Acapulco. I was really hungry and Mel and Andrew were up for some drinks. The restaurant has a pier out back that extends out into Acapulco Bay. We sat right down at the end of the pier to enjoy our food, drinks and the view.

A great start to the day. There will be another entry for our tour for later today.

wow those divers are quite short! I was gonna say the most impressive thing was them climbing the cliffs, but I'm sure the diving is amazing too!
