Greetings from Kendal......Just finished day 4 of my 5 day course and thought I update you on the week. The upholstery class is great. It's held in a old stone barn that they rent just outside of Kendal on a beautiful country road. There are some picutres attached. And my instructor, Marion, is actually younger than me (yes I know you all assumed that upholstery is for old bittys but, it can be young and hip too!). Marion is from France and five months ago she knew almost no English and now she is doing all the instruction for the courses that they hold, which is pretty impressive. She also stays in the same accomodations that I am so she can drive me back an forth to the course every monrning (very convenient). However, she drives her car she brought from France, which means she has a car that looks like it should be driving on the "right" side but she still has to drive on the opposite side. It's very confusing.

She also took me out to her Tuesday night 'knitting at the pub", and I realized that in the UK a pub isn't so much a bar as a community centre. There were 2 other groups who were meeting there, including a bunch of crotchety old men who do trivia night. However, little did I know that there is a turf war between the trivia group and the knitters....the trivia people don't like that the knitters try to guess the answers to the questions (and sometimes loud enough so they can hear), and the knitters just don't want the trivia people to be there at all.......yet every week they sit in the same location and roll their eyes at each other and make snide comments. It's like gangs wars but much tamer as thier weapons of choice are knitting needles and/or useless infomation. Marion also took me out to dinner for my birthday on Wednesday which was nice.

My chair is coming along pretty well, I hope to get it mostly finished before I leave tomorrow. It's a a type of "nursing chair" which has a high back but is quite low to the ground (very short legs). It should be quite nice when it is done.

Tomorrow night , I'm off to Bath for a day, and then on to Cornwall for my next week of upholstery!
