When we got to Honolulu we were a little bit surprised because the guy with whom we were supposed to be staying, Marty, decided that rather than letting us stay with him, he was just going to pick us up at the airport and drop us off at the curb of some hostel in downtown Waikiki. We couldn't camp because the offict to get the permit was closed due to a furlough day and couldn't see spending $60 a night for the two of us to stay in the hostel. After a bunch of information gathering we found a place to stay that wouldn't cost us much at all. After a long, heavy walk from Waikiki to UH, where the Prin group was staying at the moment, Austin and waited under a tree, ate a dinner of cliff bars and snickers, and played some Frisbee. When Blair and Brett got back from dinner I showered and went to surprise Annabelle!
It went perfectly. Blair texted her asking her to let him in the dorm where she was staying, under the guise that his girlfriend wasn't answering the phone. When Annabelle came to the door I stepped out into view.
Her face went completely blank as she tried to process what she was seeing. All she seemed able to say was "Are you serious? Oh my gosh!" It was really cute and GREAT to see her!
We hung out for the next 4 days swimming at the beach in Waikiki, hiking Diamond Head, and enjoying Hawaii. I hung out with Annabelle as much as I could. It was so nice getting to lay around with her on the beach and hold her hand in the ocean.
One of the cool things that Austin and I got to do which I liked a lot was go to Pearl Harbor and see the USS Arizona memorial. It was our last day on O'ahu, and the last full day in the states actually. We rode the bus, affectionately named by Hawai'ians, TheBus, out there in the early afternoon right after the Prin group did the same tour. We saw the museum and some of the artifacts outside. It was cool for me to realize while we were there that I had now been to the site of the initiation of our involvement in WWII and the end (Hiroshima). Out
on the memorial was incredible but too short.
That night we tried to run down to the beach (3.1 miles) in time for sunset but sadly just missed it. I got to walk around Waikiki alone while Austin talked to Rosie for one of the last times in a long while, and I found my quintessential Hawai'ian necklace that I had been looking for as well as a semi hidden luau tucked back just off of the main street through Waikiki. Austin and I met up with Annabelle who walked back with us all the way to the dorms as we shared two venti frappuchinos from Starbucks.
Austin and I then spent the rest of the night packing and left walking with all of our stuff at 3:30am to catch our 4:30am cab to the airport. We checked in at the airport for our flight and we were on our way to NZ baby!
