It was a very early morning as we had to on the bus by 7:05. We got more sleep than expected with the crazy party that went on last night, but I was still quite tired. The interislander ferry left Wellington at 8:15am and was three hour journey to the South Island town of Picton. I slept most of the way on a bench seat in the bar area as did most of the other Kiwi passengers.
Once we arrived in Picton we loaded onto the Big Green Kiwi bus and were headed to Nelson, our end destination of the day. We stopped for lunch around 1:30pm which Pete and I were both starving by then. I had my very 1st pie to eat as they are served most places in NZ. We would call it a pot pie in the US. It was stuffed with steak, mushrooms and beans. It was actually pretty pleasant. Pete ate a vegetarian lasagna as there were no sandwiches and he wasn’t up for the pie. We also split a pottle(cup) of fries.
Oh the subtle differences in American English and British English(proper English as the British say).
After lunch Pete and
I decided we would treat ourselves to a waffle cone of the famous NZ ice cream flavor, Hokey Pokey. It is vanilla ice cream with caramel and honeycomb crunches. WOW it truly is great.
Back on the bus for another hour or so into Nelson, NZ capital of the most sunshine. There were 3 couples on the bus and only 2 of us got double rooms at another hostel named The Custom House. It was a great change from the typical hostel we had been staying in. This was a historic building with the rooms upstairs; very quant and quiet atmosphere. Well needed along this trip as we our bodies are starting to feel exhausted from always being on the go, walking lots and doing adventurous activities.
The hostel had 2 computers that had free internet so we got some wedding planning done, a few blogs updated, checked emails and Facebook, also got to Skype Pete’s parents.
We decided instead of being on the computer all afternoon that we should walk around the town since we were only there for one night. We walked along the Tasman Sea for about 20 minutes then turned back around to
head into the main town area. We walked for awhile before we found open restaurants, stores etc. There was a annual festival going on with music which was entertaining while we ate dinner.
The dinner was great as we paid 15 NZD=$10.80 for meat of choice, carrots, beans, potatoes, squash, diced apples and FABULOUS dessert. I had pork(go Dad) and Pete had chicken. Oh I realized how much I miss dessert as it isn’t really served in China, possibly watermelon is the only thing you get after your meal.
Our bodies decided we had enough as I was really sore from white water rafting the day before, but yet again if felt great to feel the soreness as it meant I had a good workout. Not much of that going on since I left the US.
We got some groceries for breakfast and snacks on the bus at Woolworths, then walked back to the hostel. We got back around 7:30pm did a load of laundry, got on the internet for about 20 minutes, showered and read our books in bed.
Nice relaxing evening.
