An early start walking down to the river a wonderfully relaxing day chugging slowly down the Mekong; snoozing, reading, taking photos, and generally watching the world go by. Fantastic forests and rock formations on either side, with the odd boat going by and groups of water buffalo, gold prospectors, a lone goat on some of the many small beach like clearings!

The evening was spent in the small town of Pakbeng. Luckily there were local porters to cart our bag to the guest house which was up a rather steep and rugged hill - a dollar well spent! A walk through the village and its market gave an authentic sense of Laos life. Further up the hill was another Buddhist Wat, more run down than most we’ve seen but all the more genuine for it.

Dinner was a mixture of Laotian and Indian food comprising of simple mixes of meat and vegetable with delightful spicing. We then gate-crashed a party held by one of the local Governors joining the locals in various Laotian line dances (not the easiest thing to do in walking boots!) - along with a German couple that had completely lost the plot - beating any embarrassing uncle at any wedding I’ve been to!
