Big Maria Mountains
Tthe Blythe Intaglios, a group of gigantic figures are found on the ground east of the Big Maria Mountains, about 15 miles (24 km) north of downtown Blythe just west of U.S. Highway 95 near the Colorado River. That means that today was our last full day at River Breeze RV Resort.
After removing the sun guard covers, I checked the tire pressure in the four tires on Uncle Joe; all were at the recommended 80 psi.
The rear tires on The Beast required about 3 pounds each. Done.
“Hey Nan; let’s go see the Intaglios!”
“The who?”
So we three climbed in The Beast and headed for the Blythe Intaglios, a group of gigantic figures found on the ground east of the Big Maria Mountains, about 15 miles (24 km) north of downtown Blythe just west of U.S. Highway 95 near the Colorado River. The largest human figure is 171 feet (52 m) long. The intaglios are best viewed from the air.
The figures are believed to be between 450 and 2,000 years old. According to the Mohave and Quechan Indians, natives to the lower Colorado River area, the human figures represent Mastamho, the creator of all life. The animal figures represent Hatakulya, one of two mountain lions/persons who helped in the creation. Sacred ceremonial dances were held in the area in ancient times to honor the creation.
We couldn’t see the Intaglios from the ground, but with was a fun, short day drive.
We have enjoyed our month stay on the Colorado River. We met some nice folk and enjoyed jawing with them. I made a little pocket money by creating a digital painting of a cute little dog in the campground.
I’ve posted a photo of the a section of the Big Maria Mountains in this blog.
Tomorry, we are off to El Centro, CA; Rio Bend RV Park and Golf Resort. I suspect to find one or more cute little dogs to make paintings of.
Stay tuned.
