Only a couple of days before this year's travels start! With no rock solid schedule we find it quite exciting to look at the map on our wall showing Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam upto the Chinese border! The number of flags marking places of interesting places is sweeping across the map and it's a good feeling to get some rough knowledge of local geography before we arrive. We now have 60 day visa's for thailand which gives us more freedom than having to produce a flight ticket out of the country for the Thai authorities.
A rough plan is to spend 3 days in Bkk then head south to the beaches for "battery charging". Once recharged and aclimatised we fancy heading south east from Bkk, down the coast towards Cambodia taking in as many islands as possible before the border crossing .
From there our options are open so now its just case of checking our kit and throwing it into our packs: living room floor looks like the result of a burglary but to me this is a great part of travelling, the expectation, the "do I really need this?" bit and..............looking at the snow outside knowing that we are leaving the english winter behind!!!
Every year we say that we will pack lighter than last year but we will see! Last year we packed for extremes at both ends of the climatic scale: the heat of the atacama desert to the extreme cold and wet of Torres del Paine. We also packed complete cooking and camping kit which we will not be taking this year apart from sleeping bags and mossie net so we should be much lighter this time round!

Hi Dave ..... wow .... lucky you two .... only seems like yesterday i saw you on the train back from your 2007 travels ( i think it was 2007??) have a great time ... and i will keep an eye on the blog .....good luck and enjoy ....ps ... they say the diving in cambodia is the worlds best secret .... let me know if it is will ya ...... have a good one .... take care .....rob
