Our last week “together”... wow, that sounds weird to say. It seems like just yesterday we were getting off the bus in Kuala Lumpur to intense humidity and smells anticipating the long journey ahead of us. It is true that time does indeed fly when you’re have the time of your lives.
For our last week, on December 9th we headed to Dunsborough, near Margaret River, south of Perth. 12 years ago when I purchased my timeshare, I had no idea I’d be taking advantage of it on this side of the world, but man are we glad we have it. We stayed in a super nice place stocked with a pool, hottub, barbecues and beach access. Being able to kite in front of our place would have really topped it off, but unfortunately it was a wind sheltered bay. It’s funny that a wind-sheltered bay doesn’t excite me as much anymore as a bay with nuking 25 knot winds and sand pelting my ankles. Most tourists head as far from the beach as they can with a day like that.. not us.. we run for the beach as fast as we can.
Margaret River is famous for kiting. It’s also famous for surfing with some sweet reef breaks at the river mouth. We were excited for what it had to offer, but unfortunately the wind just wasn’t on our side for a few days. Thankfully Margaret River is even more famous for another “W” word... Wine. There is a winery on every corner and lined up on every every road. It’s Australia’s version of Napa, with vines and beautiful country for miles. And so needless to say, we tasted and tasted and tasted.
Having about enough of the wine (I know, its hard to believe), we were really happy to finally get some wind on our 4th day. We got to kite at a beach in Yallingup not far from our place. Being the 11th spot we’ve kited, we were stoked to find one of our definite favorites of West Oz. It was a perfect day, smooth wind and a fun reef break. The water was so clear, we could see bright coral just below us in some spots as little fish scattered when we rode over. Just stay on your feet. After a nice dinner at home with our new German friend, Jens, Monty and he got one more day of kiting in Margaret River before our departure. I watched them kite in a monster break that towered at least 2 times their size. My man is such a stud. A stud and the most wonderful man I know. I owe him my love of this new sport and the progression I have experienced over the last few weeks. I just watch and learn... I am so lucky.
Monty left last night with a tearful goodbye (as you can imagine). I will miss him terribly, but the next leg of this journey is all me. 7 weeks of kiting and Kiwis. I am now on a shuttle bus with 6 other wind lovers, heading up to Lancelin, the birthplace of Monty’s biggest kiting progression. Yes, I am the only chick and yes, I am the one with the most stuff. Not surprising. But, they have wind surfing gear with 2 boards each, so I don’t feel too bad. We are packed into this thing, gear loaded to the max, I don’t think we could fit a fly in here.
Oh yippee, we have arrived... so I’ve gotta go get settled and get a kite in. I’ll try and blog as much as possible. Please feel free to send a quick hello to the lone traveller from time to time. Any and all words mean so much out here and I’m so appreciative of everyone for keeping in touch... G’day.
PS: I’m loading this after the kite session... Wow!! strong winds and fun times!! These next two weeks look bright. 😊 Merry Summer Christmas!
