Udaipur
Clothes drying and view toward Island Palace where Octopussy was filmed Pushkar to Upaipur - 302 km, approx 6 hour drive 7th December Our next stop was Udaipur, a city set on Lake Pichola. There is a beautiful city palace on the banks of the lake which we explored and then treated ourselves to a beer (or two) at the very posh hotel in its grounds while we watched the sunset. On the lake is the Lake Palace where some of the Bond film Octopussy was filmed; Indians seem to like constructing grand buildings on rocks in the water we’ve noticed. We visited Ahar where 250 cenotaphs of the maharajas are built - a weird sight, and also visited the local sights.
We were pleasantly surprised by Upaipur as although it is a fairly large town, it is well setup for tourists with plenty of shopping, cafes, and restaurants and the shop people weren’t (too) pushy... quite a change from Agra!
Having had enough of old buildings, open sewers, negotiating narrow streets with mopeds, cows, cars and people who all wanted to know where we were from and if we would like to look in their shop.... we decided to find some tranquillity. A few hours were spent at
Udaipur 2
City Palace a hotel with a pool where we soaked up some sun, read a book and had a snooze.
On our final night we found a lovely hotel restaurant set back from the main streets in a little oasis. Seated on sofa beds we ate a lovely curry fish meal with a few beers and then treated ourselves to an apple sheeha (flavoured tobacco smoked through a water pipe)! A lovely way to finish our stay in the town.
