So after our early morning bus to Ben Tre we finally arrived, it didnt take us long to find a decent hotel as there were only 3! Turned out we had come to a completely non-tourist town, even though its in the guide book, we were the only tourists there, was nice though. After a little stroll around realising that there was pretty much nothing to do here, we decided tomorrow we would catch our bus to our next town Can Tho, which should be a bit more interesting. We sorted out our bus tickets, caught up with some stuff on the internet, had some good cheap local food - really dirty little places but the food is amazing! And resorted to an early night. Shame there wasn't much here as the people were sooo friendly! Everyone just says hello to you and doesn't even ask you to buy anything after! We were in the supermarket and we had mums forcing there children to come up to us and say hello, had a whole conversation with this one woman, really really nice people 😊
Anyway, got our next bus to Can Tho around lunch time and finally arrived there about
4pm. Had a bit of a long walk to the main riverfront where the hotels are but after asking for a few directions off some locals (again really friendly) we finally made it. Spent aaaaggggessss searching for a hotel though, some were a bit more than we wanted to pay, some were just really dirty but bumped into this woman who had given us direction earlier from the bus station and she directed us to another hotel which turned out perfect, air con, tv hot water for $10 😊
In Can Tho there was a lot more choice of places to eat, some local places but also some nicer restaurants. There wasn't much to do round here apart from boat trips along the river to visit the floating markets, our hotel had offered us a trip for $40 which we thought was a bit too much, so Thurs we spent just wandering around Can Tho, having some afternoon cocktails 😊 bit of shopping in the supermarket and searching for cheaper boat trips. Managed to find a deal for $13...much better, and the lady who was selling it to us was really sweet. So we booked that for tomorrow monring,
had to get to the boat for 7am!!! :s
We managed to make it in time for our trip (amazing!) and our lady was there waiting for us in her little boat, her son was with her too. We had a lovely boat trip along the river to the floating market, was a bit annoying as we got pressured by some sellers into buying drinks for the woman and her son, even though the woman didnt want a drink! Later she stopped a boat that was selling pineapple on sticks and she brought one for me and Ste...think it was to make up for the drink 😊 She took us back along some tiny canals, it was soo beautiful apart from the fact the river is sooo polluted, literally people who live along the river just dump there rubbish there, so not so good, and all the plastic bags kept getting caught in our propella, 3 times we had to stop. Anyway we got back, later than planned and we gave her a nice tip as she was just really nice. Rushed back to hotel packed up and got the bus to our last place Rach Gia.
Bus
journey was ok, crazy as ever! Arrived in the bus station and since we weren't too sure on where the hotels were, somewhere along the front where the ferrys leave to Phu Quoc Island, we agreed to take a motorbike taxi there as some guy told us it was 4km away to the port. We knew they might be exaggerating, which they were, it was only about 1km away! But never mind, we only paid them 1pound and they waited for us to buy our ferry tickets for tomorrow then drove us to a hotel, did a little bit of searching the hotels and finally found a decent one for $7, bargain! Air & TV too 😊 Had a nice stroll along the port, not that pretty but the sunset was nice and all the local kids were playing football along the front. Gonna gran some cheap dinner as no proper restaurants around here and have an (yes another one) early night as ferry to Phu Quoc is at 7.30am! All these early mornings!
Lots of love,
