Fiji 008
Hotel Beach. Bula! :-)
Arriving in Fiji on the Tuesday evening, we were greeted by the driver that the hotel had arranged for us. The journey would take an hour and a half with nothing more than a few villages between Nadi and Sigatoka where we would be staying. Having been to Ko Samui and Phuket we expected it to be similar but it was quite different. There was very little to be seen in the way of tourist shops, cafes and fast food places. It seems that although there are signs of development for hotels and houses along the road, the Fijians have managed to keep their paradise island exactly that. There are masses of fields growing sugar cane along the road and occasionally you would smell the burning where they had cut it down and see the trucks passing by with it piled high.
We are ashamed now to write that having arrived at the resort we didn’t leave it for the whole week. Two and half months of travelling had caught up with us and we spent the entire time relaxing by the pool or on the beach. Our days consisted of having breakfast, claiming a spot by
the pool, reading, having lunch, swimming and having dinner. Most days we would have a work out in the gym as well (so we wouldn’t feel so guilty about lying around!)
There were a lot of activities put on by the resort, at night they would have a daily torch lighting ceremony and there were all sorts of walks, water activities, night entertainment, films etc. On the first day, I joined in on the aqua aerobics, which was more fun than strenuous - result. We also got involved in one of the night entertainments and got up for a bit of a dance with the people from the local village that had come to show different traditional Fijian dances. They put hand made flower wreathes around our necks, wow I thought I was a master for being able to manage a daisy chain - you should have seen these! Gorgeous and the smell of the flowers was amazing.
The area that we were staying at is known as the Coral Coast and it was amazing to walk along the beach and see bits of broken coral washed ashore. Another nightly ritual would be in trying to avoid stepping
on the massive frogs on the way back to our bure. Think they came from the stream that ran near by.
All in we had a very relaxing time Probably just as well considering the jam packed time we have planned for LA and NY!
Love
