Maybe our shortest day, .9 engine to travel, but not the easiest. Leaving Norfolk too late to tackle the complex bridges and deadlines at the top of the ICW, we decided to scoot across the Elizabeth River to Portsmouth and get an earlier start the next day

We were a few days at the dock in Norfolk doing maintenance, so Ginger developed her own fan club of regular visitors, like James and a friend who waved us off and wished us well.

These boats are a few examples of our floating neighbours, all with different agendas and trying to be 'together' in the same little patch of water in a 10 minute period.

And then there's resourceful people like Peter, a local captain, who happened to be taking upgrading for his 100 ton qualification for a passenger ship. He graciously hopped on board, to asisst us in a safe crossing and beautiful moorings in historic Portsmouth.

DA BOAT
I wonder about that grey boat cube, too. My best educated guess is that it's a Borg ship trapped by an ancient port monster that thought it was a free breakfast, but got its fangs stuck in the ship's hull that immediately shot out its own tentacles upon being so impertinently attacked. Leading to a lose-lose situation.

From Portsmouth
The large square boat is a floating barracks boat. When the Navy ships are undergoing maintenance the crew moves aboard the barracks in order to have a place to live but not be in the way of the work being done on their ship. I wish we had more time to talk about the ICW between Portsmouth and Wilmington, there are some nice places to drop the hook. Enjoy your trip!

Thrilled for you
I'm very excited that all this is happening. It's getting more and more difficult to just drop over and chat. Oh well. Maybe in January. I have friends in Yulee Florida so may come down and make it two visits. Keep having fun. Miss you. Mike
