Beautiful Lake Titicaca
Cracking sunsets, though it´s best to hang on for the afterglow. Er, Not The One From The Song
Tim and Sue have travelled on from Peru into Bolivia and it´s starting to feel like a lot more of the remote part of South America. The transit is enhanced by following the immigration procedure less than proficiently and Tim having to carring both Sue and Tim´s pack back down and up a hill at the boarder - about 30kg at about 3800m. Great. So Tim´s acclimatized, then.
Copacabana is a small town on a very beautiful part of the shores of Lake Titicaca. Some of it´s a bit ramshackle, as you might expect, but there´s some charm to the town and bit of a hippie feel to it, which is reflected in the Las Olas hostel where they stay - the mock-trulli home is a duplex affair modelled on a hermit crab shell. Grab a guitar from reception.
The skies over Lake Titicaca are stunning here. The lake creates it own microclimate and can be searing blue with coulds held at bay at the edge or covered by brooding dark thunderclouds. Some pretty amazing sunsets are in order.
The highlight of their stay here is a trip to the
Isle del Sol, the birthplace of the Inca. As luck would have it it´s a crystal clear day. A trip to the island involves seeing the old Inca ruins and a walk the length of the Isle - about 10km, with some hills taking the height up to about 4080m. Needless to say, the views are absolutely stunning and even though both our hikers are exhausted it´s fair to say they couldn´t care less.
After a day of rest they decided that on the last night to try and have a ´big night out´ in Copacabana which consists of being hounded from restaurant to bar by what can only be described by crap buskers who can´t play in tune and can´t juggle to save their lives.
