HELLO PERU!!
We have to say that our first experiences in Peru have been quite interesting!
We arrived yesterday and got to our hotel via local shuttle service. The drivers are nuts here! Not just nuts...crazy nuts!! Yes, we are going down a 2 lane street that Peruvian drivers have converted into 4 lanes. They are swirving in and out and blaring on the horn like there is no tommorrow! I thought I had experienced Latin American driving...but I was wrong...Guate/Mexico is very tame compared to this. Jeff will not let me cross the street unless nothing is coming...he keeps picturing my body in a million little pieces on the street...nuts!
Anyways enough about the driving I have to tell you about our first full day in Peru. We decided that we would walk around a little bit exploring the central park and the beach...maybe see a few shops. We were strolling along central park when these 2 men sitting on a park bench, saw Jeff{s Canada hat and yelled out...You are from CANADA?? We went over and introduced ourselves to find out one is from Toronto and one from Peru. We had no idea what to think...
Roy and Haviar
Roy from Toronto and Haviar from Peru, crazy guys! We ended up chatting for a bit and to our surprise the Peruvian was a tour guide in Cusco. He was also one of the funniest little men I have ever met! His friend (who was married to a mail order bride from Cuba..completely different story) was interesting as well. The guy from Toronto hated everything...grumpy old man that he was he hated immigration, the government, fishing with a hut in winter, Canadian law, the colour purple, wind....you get the gist....They decided to walk to the beach with us and show us around a little. Six hours and quite a few pisco sours later we made it back to our hotel at 3 in the afternoon.
Our advernture went like this...we went to all the little beaches in the area...including La Playa Amor..which has a huge statue of 2 people making out right in the centre...bizzar. They insisted we get a pic infront of it. We then went to some shops along the water...then got in a cab and went to a nearby town for lunch. The place was so cheap...less than 50 bucks for all 4, all the food and drink we could handel (for me not
too much, one pisco sour does me in). Lunch was probably the most interesting part of our day. For an appetizer we ate raw fish...no not sushi...basically raw pickerel with sauce! I was a little grossed out at first but it ended up tasting good... and not just cause I was drinking pisco sours. Our little Peruvian friend got a little tipsy to say the least...he was hooting at women, stumbling up the stairs, and ended up serenading 3 Japaneese women who were shocked by his John Travolta wannabe dancing!
We never expected to meet 2 guys like that...but it was so fun! And we made a great contact, he set us up with the cheapest places in the cities we are going to. We will be going to the beach with him on Friday for more crazy times...
We will keep you posted.
