Hello!!

Australia was bad for our blogging mojo, we had to pay for internet access, so it was a choice between blogging and coffee. Those who have worked with us understand that coffee won!!

After Sydney, we headed to Canberra for 2 days. Everyone always says that there isn't much in Canberra, but thinking people were being harsh, we headed off, excited at the prospect of Australia's capital. We pretty quickly realised that there isn't much in Canberra!

We did enjoy a trip to the Parliament though, and went in to watch the current government pounding the opposition in open question time. The big debates of the day, immigration, the environment and the economy. Could have been in any parliament really.

After the excitement of Canberra, we took the overnight bus to Melbourne....still no Kangaroos to be seen.

Melbourne was very cool. Unfortunately that applied to the weather as well as the city. Our standard outfit of shorts and sandals were quickly replaced by shoes, trousers and fleeces! It was also quite expensive so with an eye on our dwindling funds we trawled the city for coffee deals, happy hour drinks and second hand books... luxury travel!

We also went to the old gaol in Melbourne, just opposite our hostel. It was a really scary place, they had left it pretty untouched and they even had a gallows set up inside the jail where Ned Kelly was hanged. Being the respectful types, Bill and Stu donned Ned Kelly armour and had a strut about!!!

Lisa also had her first trip to a Casino, a complete monstrosity of a place. The three ladies lost the extravagant sum of 1 dollar each. Lisa got so excited when she won 15 cents that someone actually stopped to see what the fuss was about. Like all bad gamblers, she put it straight back into the machine, she'll never learn. Spurred on by our entry into gambling, we had a little flutter on the Melbourne cup. We had a 5 dollar bet each and Stu's horse romped home to win. We spent our ill gotten gains of 15 dollars in the pub.....barely enough to get 2 drinks!

Stuart's Aunt and Uncle live in the middle of the bush outside Melbourne so we took the chance to pay them a visit. It was great to spend some time with them both and to (at last!) spot some kangaroos. I think they were relieved to see Stuart leave that evening since last time he visited he stayed there for 2 weeks lying on the sofa, reading a book and eating all of their food!

And so that was Australia.... next stop Singapore!
