Sam in the Snow
This is my mate Sam taking a well deserved break sitting in the snow after just getting off the chair lift at Sunshine. We’ve had some great conditions in the mountains since I last updated you all. For about a week in January it snowed non-stop up at Sunshine, over 80cms fell in just a couple of days so conditions were just amazing. We also took advantage of the weather and took a trip over to Kicking Horse in Golden. It’s a couple of hours away from Banff but well worth heading out to in good conditions, three big powder bowls to keep you occupied and the best thing about it is that there are no beginners there! Which in some ways was not so good, I’d got used to cruising past people at Sunshine with a smug feeling of “I ski better than you now, you 6 day-a-year skiers….’, at Kicking Horse, I was the one with everyone whistling past my ears! I guess that is payback for having such terrible smug thoughts!!! We also ate in the restaurant at the top of the mountain, apparently it’s the highest restaurant in Canada, with awesome views, only it was snowing that day, so we couldn’t see anything! But hey, it was good food (if hideously expensive), you have to treat yourselves sometimes don’t you?
Block of Snow...!
This was taken at Kicking Horse when it kept snowing, snowing , snowing. A bit of a random one I know but I liked it! I’ve attached some piccies of what it was like when we had the big dump of snow, hopefully it will give you all some idea of how cool it was.
Last month we had a staff party out at one of our wilderness hostels just north of Lake Louise. It’s called Mosquito Creek, although at this time of the year there are no mosquito’s! It’s a beautiful place though, set in the woods in the mountains above Lake Louise, apparently if you stay there in the summer you get to share your front garden with the local bears - sounds great! Because of it’s altitude, it gets way more snow than we do in Banff - it was like a fairly tale winter wonderland, apart from the outdoor toilet (I use the word ‘toilet’ in the loosest sense of the word, more like hole in the ground with a fake toilet sat on top), which didn’t quite fit in with the fairytale theme, at least at this time of the year everything is frozen…… Anyway, back to the party. A few of us had to work in the day so we got there early evening. Mark, the manager of
Sun at Sunshine
Sometimes Sunshine Village lives up to its name! Mosquito Creek had certainly been busy, the pathway to the huts was lined with fairy lights and he had built the word ‘Lunacy’, the name of the event, with big blocks of snow, also lit up with a load of fairy lights - it looked great. We had a big bonfire going and had taken up one of the keg’s from our bar so there was plenty of beer to go around. There is also a sauna at the hostel which came in very useful, as it was bloody freezing as the night wore on. It was quite a surreal experienced, sitting fully clothed (and by that I mean in ski gear, with a duvet jacket and a woolly hat), in a sauna, in the middle of the night, with a beer in my hand, and just feeling comfortably warm! That was balanced out by the visits to the igloos out the back that had been built a few weeks earlier - another surreal experience, sat in an igloo in the early hours with a pint (and not quite so comfortably warm)! Not something I ever expect to experience in blighty….!! The next morning myself, Anna and Mark went for
Lunacy
I'm sure it took him hours but it was worth it, Mark's Lunacy sign was a work of art. a short snow shoe around by the river out the back and then joined the boys playing in the snow on the snow skate which was also fun, so a good time was had by all!
Since then things have been fairly quiet and normal! What with working and skiing there isn’t a great deal of time to fit much else in (apart from drinking and partying of course). I’m trying to save up some money so that I can do some touring around Canada before I move on. I also have a three day back country skiing trip coming up at the end of March which should be excellent but terrifying at the same time! At the moment I’m just trying to sort out when I will be hitting the beaches of Hawaii, as soon as I know I will let you all know.
Oh, and one other thing. As random as it may sound, Tom Green (as in the guy that married and divorced Drew Barrymore, got testicular cancer, and stars in a few insane films) came with his ‘rap’ band and did a gig at Wild Bill’s. We all went, and it was rubbish. So
Fun in an Igloo
Me, Mark (my housemate, not the lunacy guy), J.D. and Miguel drinking beer in an igloo. if he ever tours England you’ve all been warned - stay away….!
That’s it for now. Keep me updated with all the goss.
Take care,
Lucy xx
