Top Beer
This bar was next door to the hotel where I lived the first two months in Brazil. It is now called Sushi Beer but the same place. Spend many hours here. Thursday, September 10
We slept late today. Jackie and I went to the breakfast bar at the hotel and were very pleased with the choices. If I eat breakfast there every day I will gain a ton of weight.
After breakfast, we went for a walk in Savassi. This area is the equivalent of Buckhead with lots of shops and restaurants. Most shops are modern and chic. Our plan was to set up the operation of a cell phone for use while we are here. On Wednesday evening, Ester Maria gave us a Vivo cellular sim card. We tried it in a cell phone that we carried down with us. When we tried to buy minutes for it at the Vivo office, we discovered that the phone was blocked by ATT. So, we went to an office that could un-block the phone. Only, after one hour, we discovered that they were not able to do so. So, we gave up on that plan for a while.
We passed by the hotel where I stayed when I first came to Brazil and checked out the bar next door that was our hangout. It had changed names but was still there. I had
Pastelaria Marilia de Dirceu
Our favorite treat in Brazil was the pastel. It is a fried pie with different ingredients. I loved the beef pie. always gotten my hair cut across the street from the bar but discovered that it had been closed down for some time.
We were reminded about the serious work by people in recycling here. Every day you will see men pulling carts down the street with enormous loads of everything imaginable, including car parts, cardboard, paper and wood products. It is separated by hand at night and then hauled through the streets to be sold to recycle centers.
Savassi is known for its stores and shops. Jackie checked many out as we walked around. We discovered that the prices had risen considerably since we lived here.
I found a store that sold art supplies and purchased some pastel pencils and other supplies. Later in the afternoon I got a chance to start a drawing for a neighbor. While here, I plan to draw portraits of several of my grandkids.
At 5:00pm, Jackie attended an appointment she had with an old friend of hers, Doctor Teofilo Taranto. He is a renowned plastic surgeon. She asked him if he thought she should freshen up a bit. Of course, he was pleased to see her again and agreed to a small touch
up. So, we now have an appointment for Monday morning.
After seeing the Doc we walked over to Maria’s condo. On the way we passed two important locations from my past. First was CEMIG, the power company where I worked. I have many memories there. One of them is the day that I was driving out of the parking garage located in the basement. As I neared the exit a man approached my car and beat on the passenger window. He had just lost his job and was blaming our team. He held up a photo of his family and appeared to be crying. I felt like I was about to be killed. About that time the light changed and I was able to drive away. Nothing like that ever happened again but it left a lifelong impression on me. I never took light the termination of any worker, even before this event. But each time after I could see his eyes when I considered the impact.
The second location that we passed was the Diamond Mall. It was a nearby shopping center with a very nice food court where I had lunch most days while working at CEMIG.
It was like going back in time to walk through the mall.
We ended the day at Maria’s talking with her and Ester Maria.
