Mt. Rushmore
Amazing detail.
use the trees for an idea of perspective. Mt. Rushmore and Carhenge - the last of the trip 😞
It had to happen eventually... my road trip had to have a final entry.
When I realized what day it was, I knew I had to do only part of what I had in mind. The must-have's were Mt. Rushmore and Carhenge. The nice-to-have's were Devil's Tower and the Badlands. I skipped the nice-to-haves.
The first picture here is Mt. Rushmore. Can't miss that right? iF you've seen one picture you've seen them all but I do have to say that it is a nice experience to actually see it in person. It is smaller than I thought it would be. Don't get me wrong - it is still an amazing feat to have carved these faces in this detail in the rock on a cliff - and they are still plenty big... but I think I just didn't really ever get perspective in a picture. Have a closer look at the trees in the picture for a better perspective. Below that is a lot of rock chips...
On my way up to Mt. Rushmore, I drove by the partial carving of Crazy Horse. If I
Carhenge!
How did they come up with this idea??? actually they might say so on their website... hadn't looked over at the right time, I would have missed it. I think it will be amazing when it is finished but right now it is only a face.
I really wish I had more time for South Dakota. This time and a time before when I have been here, it looks like it would be a very nice place to spend more time. My drive through the Black Hills was very pleasant through rolling forested hills. Like I mentioned above, my original plan was to drive to the Badlands but I had to make a choice and yes, the roadside attraction won out. How could I NOT visit Carhenge? I was all this way! I could take a 2 hour detour down in to Nebraska and straight down to Route 80 to complete my trip.
Nebraska was a bit more boring... sorry Nebraskans who might be reading this but it is my perspective. At first, very nice to drive by field after field of corn and sunflowers and other crops but after a while, I was done with it. After a couple of delays due to road work, and then being convinced I took the wrong
Leaping Fish
This one was pretty cool way...I came upon Carhenge!! (and actually, it is marked on the map in the Rand McNally Road Atlas).
The pictures speak for themselves. Really.
It is old cars, buried and painted and made in to a replica of Stonehenge. It is an oddity in the middle of Nebraska farm fields.
And there are other things: the Leaping Fish. The Dinosaur. And a few other things I don't really get...
Of course a Wagon!
And a car buried as a time capsule.
I was glad I stopped. I would have always wondered about it if I didn't.
I am so sad my road trip has ended. Would I do it again? Absolutely positively yes, in fact I plan to. What would I do different?? I would take way more time.
The last picture here is of Buzzy - what he did when he realized we were stopping in this location for a while.
For my friends out there that have been tracking this trip, I will most likely post for the side trips, weekend trips and all the vacations I'm planning for the future. just so you know 😊.
