Today--lots of things going on in Venice, but we couldn't tear ourselves away from the living room windows.

While a number of people--including Ari, Gabriel and Dean--were sitting in the living room looking over the Grand Canal, police boats pulled up right across the canal and started pulling up something from the water. There was, in Ari's words, a "log type thing, with a furry top" in the canal. The police turned their boats away from us and heaved it out of the water and covered it with a curtain, taking it to land opposite Casa Artom. Numerous fire and police boats showed up and circled the area, putting up another curtain around the object. Our suspicions were that the brown, furry mass we saw was, in fact, a human head, bobbing out of the water.
Our suspicions were confirmed when the area was cordoned off and some men stepped off another police boat with a camera and some equipment. Some time later two women were brought to the area and shown behind the curtain. They had to sit down, and were brought glasses of water. They were then escorted away.
A blue sheet or bag, in the shape of a man (I say this because of the size) was placed in a casket-like box in what we believe was the coroner's boat and driven away. We could only conjecture as to the cause of death, who the dead man (?) was or how this person ended up in the water.
A mystery, in this most mysterious of cities, kept us staring out the window, down into the canal, for most of the afternoon.

update
An article ran in the paper: "Corpse in the Lagoon". The victim was a male, 47 years of age, resident of the Lido. A possible suicide. There was a note in the paper about the residents of nearby residences watching the unfolding events. We joked blackly: "We made the papers."
