The train journey was pretty funny, there were Devonshire cream teas available, unfortunately they sold out before our carriage, gutted, so we had to make do with lots of coffee and biscuits. Considering how long the journey was the train pulled in exactly on time, very impressive! We got a cab to our plush ‘serviced apartments’ we had booked, it was meant to be in posh Potts Point but was actually in Kings Cross where you were treated to lots of tramps weeing everywhere, gorgeous!!! We then made a quick trip down to woolies for some supplies and settled in for a night of spag bol and rubbish tv! After the now obligatory breakfast of beany toast we went and arranged our campervan and then walked down to the Pier at Potts Point, through the beautiful Botanical Gardens and round to the Opera House. As we were walking through the gardens I thought the Opera house looked a bit small and not that impressive but the closer we got the better it looked and when we got up to it I had to take my previous comments back sharpish! We tried to book tickets for the afternoon performance of Aida but
it was sold out so we settled on the next evenings performance of Poppea. As we had decided to pick up Clyde on Monday we just had the weekend in Sydney so we hopped on the Manly ferry and spent the afternoon wandering around very pretty Manly; - It so reminded us of the town where jaws was set. We got back on the ferry just after sunset and got a wicked view of the Opera House by night, not as impressively lit up as you would think! From here we walked around the harbour a bit and then made our way back to our hotel. We were up early again on Sunday and decided to spend the morning at the legendary Bondi Beach. Sydney was having a bit of heat wave so it was the perfect place to be on a sunny Sunday morning. We walked along the beach and then had a browse around the market which was very Camden like. Before we knew it, it was time for lunch and then a quick change before our trip to the Opera House. We put on our best (new) clothes and were ready and waiting for the Taxi, unfortunately
the taxi turned up really late and somehow we managed to arrive just as the doors had closed , what absolute pillocks!!! Luckily a nice lady took us through all the backstage area and led us up to our seats, not so much of a disaster after all. Poppea was ok, it was downstairs in the drama theatre rather than in the main hall; it’s a new modern opera and there isn’t much singing in it so we didn’t get the whole wicked noise treat we were hoping for but I’m glad we went to see it. After the opera we treated ourselves to a lovely piece of cake at the Guylian café by the opera House, a lovely end to a perfect day. Monday morning we sorted our ever expanding bags out and made our way over to the spaceship depot where we collected our new home for the next 33 days. It was such a lovley thought that this would be the last time we have to move our bags for a whole month and one fixed abode - albeit a toyota!? The van’s official name is lotus which so doesn’t suit him, so he has been named
Clyde after Any which Way But Loose, it’s the only honourable name to give a fellow ginger!!! After having a short lesson in how everything works, (it’s nowhere near as complicated or big as the one we had for glasto), with our bags in their new home and a map of Australia in my sweaty palms we were crossing the Sydney Harbour Bridge and on our way to exotic sounding…………………….Newcastle! The road trip begins!!!!
Just a little footnote to say i am soooooo envious of mike and Paul, Sydney is a wicked place and i so wish we could have stayed a bit longer but we got a long way to go and only 33 days to do it!!!! Hope you enjoy boys, i have the feeling you will have the time of your lives!
