Saturday, August 15, 2009: Rodgau Pow Wow

Moving like a Herd of Turtles, we went back to the Pow Wow grounds. Yesterday was a fun day, but it was hot!!!

Let me say a little bit about German pow wows. First, the facilities. Every thing was neat and orderly. Teepee camping for the hobbiests, nice shower facilities with sinks, and porta potties that never had an odor. I know that’s probably TMI (too much information), but we were all amazed!!!!

We had to set up again for Tdom Bah’s vending space and ours, get dressed in regalia, eat yet another typical German breakfast (hard roll, butter, cheese, and several types of fatty lunch meat), look for water, no gas (the Germans aren't much into water without bubbles), eat more food, and it was time for Grand Entry.

There were lots of activities of every kind. Watching the pow wow, watching horsemanship demonstrations, archery, eating, and shopping at all the vendors.

Lunch was served (we obviously think way too much about food). This free food thing is overly tempting. But lunch was always choice of spare ribs, steak (but we think it might have really been pork),

or brauts. More hard rolls and butter. Water … where’s the “real” water???? And diet Coke …. Not! We had to go to the store and buy our own.

We sang and danced and I ran back and forth from the "arena" (actually a stage; never figured out why a stage ... perhaps for the square dancers).

Johnny played his guitar, sold mucho CDs and was asked to step up and be a participant in a square dancing demonstration. He was very busy!!!

We were grateful to Annya and Roland for their hospitality. Mariah had a bedroom on the first floor, and Lee and I and David, Will and Johnny shared space on the third floor … with Will and Johnny sharing the loft above the third floor. It was Will’s “bedroom” first, but Johnny opted to go to the loft because David and Lee battled over who could snore the loudest, with David’s bed in close proximity to the one Johnny vacated.

In the wee hours of the night, the sound of boy giggles rolled down from the loft. Johnny and Will were apparently having a slumber party up there!

Finally getting to sleep,

He did a good job!
Lee and I were awakened by the sound of David moaning and growning. Loudly! At first I thought he was having a bad dream, and we didn’t want to startle him awake, but it went on and on and on. I asked Lee to get up and see what was going on because I was so tired I couldn’t get up. He did. Sorta hollered at David, and he said he wasn’t having a nightmare, his legs were cramping up. Lee asked what to do … I said flex and contract his feet thinking he was cramping in his calves. Lee rushes across to David, grabs one foot and starts flexing and contracting as instructed. In a minute, he asked David how he felt. David said, “I guess fine, if it was my foot.” But it’s my thighs. That freaked Lee out and he came back across the room and asked me what to do. David is moaning "get me water and a banana." So that’s what Lee did. Down two stories in the dark (we never got good at figuring out where the light switches were), found the bananas and brought a banana and water back to David. David

was doing better, and apparently the water and bananas did help.

We forced ourselves back to sleep. The morning came too early for us, but the Herd of Turtles herded back to the pow wow grounds.
