OK - so going to a muay thai training camp for a month seemed like a great idea at the time. Something different to do to add to our travel experiences. Let's just say that we're a little worse for wear. We just didn't anticipate the pain!!!

Before you all get worried - we actually had a fantastic time. We started training the day after we arrived (6th Feb), starting at 7 in the morning until 10 and then in the afternoon from 4pm 'til 7pm. We finished on the 6th March.

Our daily schedule for that first week was train, eat, sleep, train, eat, sleep. We were knackered! But now I can touch my toes and my head touches my knees (I haven't been able to do that for 15 years!) - i'm also well on the way to being able to do the splits! Great for those high kicks.

I got injured in the second week though - I pulled the ligaments in my right foot - and so wasn't been able to train properly for a week; Mathew was covered in bruises, sprained his knee and hurt his left foot! He managed to keep on training though - then he hurt his right foot - still carried on training! I was gutted - I never thought I'd hear myself say it, but I was getting withdrawal symptoms from not being able to train - exercise is actually quite good fun!

There was a great beach that we went to relax and swim between training sessions to try and ease the pains - really beautiful. We actually had a training session there one saturday morning but it just degenerated into a game of rugby - really good fun.

While at the gym, 3 of the students had fights - yes real life, proper fights - which gladly, they all won. It was really nerve wracking and exciting to watch.

Muay Thai is part of everyday life in Thailand - all little boys learn muay thai the same way little boys at home learn how to kick a football.

The fight nights begin with young boys not even as old as 10 years, then teenage boys then onto "older" men who have several fights under their belt. Men of 25 have been training and fighting for around 18 years. A active fighter will have a fight every 4 to 6 weeks. A couple of our trainers at the gym who are in their mid twenties have had over 150 fights.

We met some fantastic people, had a great time and we will definitely be keeping up with mauy thai. We're addicted!

We went to Phi Phi Island to relax and recuperate for a few days. Got a little bored though as we've got itchy feet - wanted to get moving again - so we left after 2 days. Next stop, Penang, Malaysia!

Dig those crazee camo boxing shorts!
- wowsah: I wouldn't want to be in a ring with either of you! Big Respect for lasting the entire month. Or, maybe you tended to the wounds with some of that infamous Thai whisky? lol. I just got back from playing in Malaysia, as it happens. Hope you enjoy. If there's time, consider travelling down the East coast... cross over from Penang to Kuala Trengannu, and work your way down to Kuantan. Then head back west to Kuala Lumpur. Malacca is also worth a visit - just before Singapore. Otherwise, try for the orang utan sanctuary in Kuching, Sarawak (East Malaysia). Priceless. Have fun, wherever you are.
