drinking on a train?
yes, thats right. you can indeed drink on a train! hello!! i am doing very well here in japan, especially since i have discovered real shopping. i went to tokyo last weekend and it was so great. there was only one day, so we had to make the most of it. we were up by 8 am. ok, 8:15, and actually had some breakfest before rushing off to the train station where we caught a train to takasaki. we then hoped on a limited express train (not the shinkansen, because it costs 40$ more) which was about 20 minutes faster to get to tokyo. seeing as the ride was about 1 hour and 45 minutes, getting up at 8 to catch this early train started to seem kinda pointless. arriving in shibuya (an area of tokyo-its quite large) at 11:30 with a growing hunger, i was really happy when graham spotted a wendys. oh spicy chicken burger! there are no wendys in the gunma prefecture (where i live right now). the chicken burger was pretty similar to home. after lunch we were off. we walked one way, looked around a sea of people, and turned the other, again facing a sea of people. normally this is no problem, but for some

these kids performed cinderella in enlgish for us reason japan has no street signs, so its a little hard to get your barrings. there was a cool shop called tokyo hands, and by shop i mean large 7 storey building, that had every possible thing you could imagine. there was a section for housewares, furniture, bags, mini booze bottles, travel goods, toys, and even craft supplies. it was crazy busy as well. after partially looking through about half of the floors i got tired. also, i didn't want to waste all my energy in just one store. there were lots of high end stores, such as gucci, prada, and many more. i even found a bruno magli store. quite exciting. continuing on through many people i got to see omotesando-a wonderful street full of many shops from la coste to miss sixty. it was great. there's even a new mall that opened a few weeks ago. me and graham dared to check it out. it was cool, but so full i felt like a cattle slowly moving along in a giant heard. the entrance was small, and many steps to go up. the top opened into a large atrium with spirally walkways so you just keep walking down

heading out for karaoke the path and get to see every store. after about 30 minutes of this me and graham found the nearest exit. i was also able to check out harajuku. it reminded me of a few stores on robson and granville, amplified by 100. our day in tokyo was awesome. we left tokyo around 830-9pm and arrived back at out place by 1130. man, it was a long day. my legs hurt after that.
my legs had also had a workout a few days before when i went to a kindergarden to teach a class. it was pretty fun. the kids were cute and eager, and yelled at the top of their lungs. the workout came from teaching them actions such as walk, run, jump, hop ect. where i was the demonstrator. so not only did i have to hop around first by myself, i then had to get the kids to follow me around. i was a little shocked when i broke a sweat; even more shocked the next day when my calves were hurting. work is going very well. i get visit other schools in the area. some kids even put on a play for their english class.

drinking before karaoke it was pretty fun.
yesterday one of the members at my school took me and graham on a tourist day for grahams birthday (which is this weekend). the member (akira) took us to karuizawa, a tourist town similar to whitsler, except for its pint sized ski hill, and cheap outlet shopping. so again i got to do more shopping. it was great. there were outlet stores for so anby cool places, even a lego outlet store. i got stuff from rebecca taylor, nike (i bought a pair of cool cheap running shoes with paisley on them-an essential after walking a whole day in tokyo), penguin, la coste, beams (a japanese designer), thoery, paul smith (for graham) and many more. i didn't buy stuff at all those places, mostly b/c people in japan are miniature. i couldn't get any cool shoes because a size 7 was the largest they had. and its relaly surprising to be the largest size they carry in a store. i was definately shocked by that one. its the same number size i am at home, but instead of the sizes getting larger, they get small. a 0, 00, x0 and so on. its crazy.
