DAY 3 - July 31 - Tour the Ancient City

Our meet time for the morning was to be 10am. I think about 5 people made it and Brian and I weren’t in that group. The past few days have been so exhausting we were woken up by one of the players at about 10:30. I told them we were changing the meeting time to 11:30. When we met downstairs at 11:30 some of the guys were still sleeping.

Once everyone got up we headed across the street to eat lunch. After lunch we walked about 20 minutes over to the Coliseum. The Coliseum is a very impressive site. We all paid for a tour guide to take us through. She was very knowledgeable and taught us a lot about what really went on in the early Roman days - not what we see in the movies. The same ticket we purchased also provided us with a guided tour of Palatine Hill and the Forum. I will attach many pictures of all of this.

After our tour we walked back to the hotel and rested for about an hour before our bus picked us up for our “Rome by Night” tour. Luckily the sites we would be touring with this tour were different than the ones we saw during the day. Another good thing about this tour is that it mostly takes place on an air-conditioned bus and if I haven’t mentioned it yet, it is very hot here.

The bus first took us to Le Naumache for a very nice Italian dinner with way too much food. We were all given bread, meats, and cheeses for appetizers. Then we received a pasta and mushroom dish followed by some sort of meat wrapped in bacon with potatoes for our main course. For dessert they gave us a cone shaped like a cup filled with strawberries, cream and chocolate sauce. Obviously this was the best part of the meal for the guys, but most of them would still find room to get Gelato later.

After dinner we met up with our guide who took us around town both in the bus and walking. We went to the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and got to see another side of the Forum. This tour guide wasn’t quite as informative but I think he also started to lose patience with us as some of the guys were more interested in the street vendors and the crap they were selling rather than what he had to say.

After the tour we returned to the hotel at around 10pm. Everyone is exhausted from walking around all day and will go right to bed. Tomorrow we meet at around 10am to back to the Fina Village to watch the last day of the games. Hopefully we all make the wake-up call this time.

...I'm still thinking of dinner in Le Naumache! Wish I was there to help you guys feast--beware of feral cats in Rome--the city is teeming with them--a patient of mine returned yesterday from Rome and Corsica, had been bit by a feral cat and mugged by ten year old street urchins. Great shots so far--amazing how Charlie manages to get his mug in almost every one of them!
