I don’t believe it ! Are you kidding me ? It hasn’t rained since we picked up Lynn, Jason and Heidi from the airport in Portland, Maine yet they went home yesterday and now it’s pouring down rain again ! Lynn should have never taken those bright yellow sunshiny pj’s back home with her. She wore them the first night with us and the rain mysteriously went away but she packed them up and took them back to Georgia with her and now the rain is back. Well, even though we were in a Wal-Mart parking lot in Miramichi, New Brunswick, we didn’t care; we just laid in the bed and listened to rain pound against the roof until 11:00 this morning. We normally try to pull out by 9:00 before the crowds start rolling in to shop but we had been on the road for over two weeks now and we were completely exhausted. Out of all the Wal-Marts we’ve stayed in, I’ve never seen any Wal-Mart parking police so we figured, what the heck, we’ll press our luck and stay. I didn’t realize how bad we needed that sleep, but now we were all rested up and it was
time to face the day. We got our showers, took out the trash, washed the dishes, paid a few bills and then we hit the road. It was just the two of us now and we didn’t really have a plan so Tim just started driving and we began making our way towards Quebec. The roads were horrible but the scenery was really nice. We passed by several farm houses, each having their own grain silos and strategically planted gardens. We got a kick out of all the creative scarecrows the farmers had designed but I guess they were working because all their gardens were healthy and vibrant looking. The rain came to a light sprinkle and then eventually stopped all together. It was still kind of dark, cold and cloudy but at least it wasn’t raining. We drove alongside the river for miles and miles and saw several covered bridges. I snapped pictures as quickly as possible as we flew by each one. Our route took us through several small towns, each one special and unique in its own way. There is one thing they did all have in common and that is church. It’s so weird because you
drive through these little towns and then you look over and there’s this huge church standing just as tall and pretty as can be. They are not like our churches back home; they are all like small cathedrals with the most incredible stained glass, steeples and woodwork you have ever seen. The majority of the graveyards sit on the water which I thought was very unusual but they do have a peaceful, warm and serene feeling about them. We drove for quite sometime before we pulled over in a quaint little area called Camelton, New Brunswick. Here we stayed and had lunch at the Café Chez Wes along side the Gulf of St. Lawrence. I have got to remember to quit ordering BLT’s or any type of sandwich up here because they don’t use mayonnaise, they use miracle whip and I can’t stand that stuff. I politely put my sandwich aside and just enjoyed my bowl of soup instead. Tim had a grilled chicken Caesar salad and he said it was delicious. We finished up lunch at the café and made our way back to the motor home. The both of us were enjoying our Sunday drive across Canada but
we were still trying to deal with the language barrier. We stopped to fill up with gas and no one at the store spoke any English. Tim somehow managed to get help and then we were on our way. At this point, it was so cold outside we actually had to turn the heat on for a few minutes. Now anyone who knows Tim know that it has got to be COLD for him to turn on the heat ! He and I talked a lot about the trip, our kids, our friends and family but mostly we just relaxed and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. As a matter of fact, out of nowhere, we look out towards the west and what do we see, a magnificent rainbow in the Canadian sky. It was so amazing and there’s just something about rainbows that make you want to smile. Well that joy only lasted for a few minutes because the next surprise was the stench of a skunk ! Yep, there was definitely a skunk somewhere around and something had obviously made him angry. That smell got in the air vents and it just lingered on forever and ever. It did eventually
fade away but not soon enough ! About three hours had passed since lunch and we finally crossed over into The Providence of Quebec and we were at the very top part of The Appalachian Mountains. I was worried about Tim’s neck and shoulders but he insisted we continue on so I let him drive until he finally wore himself out. We had been on the road for over ten hours and had traveled a total of 540 miles today when we finally settled in at Wal-Mart in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. Now that’s what you call a Sunday afternoon drive ! It was really quite around here tonight and we were missing our crew. I guess there wouldn't be any bedtime stories tonight (sad face). Tim read his book while I tried to catch up on the blogs and then we were fast asleep. I’m sure tomorrow will be another adventure so until then, sweet dreams ! Night !
