DAY 240

Its starting to get difficult doing the blog at the moment, as its not very Rock & Roll, we are still in Darwin kicking back and we are mindful that our readers are going to get bored.

We are using this time relaxing a bit as it been quite hectic travelling for so many months, we just wanted and need to get a bit of down time.

There is no point rushing South as its cold (we see this from the Travelin Trueys blog as they are heading back home to Inverloch), and what’s the point of being cold on our adventure? We may as well enjoy the sunshine where we are and as the weather gets warmer in the South we can head that way.

So here we are in Darwin, staying on a Big4 park, we have a great spot that everybody wants right under some large tree’s that we will not give up without a fight, we have electric hook up and excellent internet access. Caroline keeps saying that we ought to be doing something but why? We have been non-stop for ages enjoy this relaxing time, as we will soon be back on that treadmill.

The only thing that has changed is that we do not have to pack the trailer away drive several hundred kilometres to find somewhere else to sleep and put the trailer back up each day, we still have to do everything else.

After a leisurely breakfast we drive in to Winnellie, a suburb of Darwin as we want to do some investigations in to a few bits and pieces for the truck, namely a roof rack, as we can store the 2nd spare wheel up there and the swag, a set on internal draws so we can store things like the lap top and the camera’s in some amount of lockable security, and a snorkel for the air filter, as everytime you do a water crossing it wrecks another air filter (not to mention the dirt tracks), so we trawl around the 4 wheel drive shops ;like ARB and TJM to get some idea of price, so we can make a financial plan.

We get back, have a spot of lunch and sit in the shade for a while, the afternoon is hot and it’s a welcome break from the heat of the day. Caroline is deep in to her book and is struggling to put it down, we go and sit by the pool and swim for a while.

When we get back we get the lap top out and catch up with a few people on Skype and Caroline manages to catch up with her Mum and Dad, the call quality, including the video, was excellent and they were on Skype for over an hour which is brilliant as there was no cost associated to it.

For our meal tonight we have heated up some left over curry and it definitely tastes better than when it was cooked on Friday night it seems to have matured with time.

We are sitting quietly and we hear the usual crashing through the branches “the Possums are coming” we see a Possum that has the prettiest face, with a Black nose and a white belly, a very tubby belly at that and she is definitely pregnant, we think it is a Northern Brush Possum, that doesn’t have a bushy tail, but a long whip type tail.

Caroline and myself are sitting as quiet as church mice and I gently break a cracker in to 4 and gently toss it in her direction when she has got her back to me, I’m sure thinks she has just stumbled over some more food and delicately picks the cracker up, she sits on her haunches and nibbles it away until it is all gone, occasionally she glances at us, just to acknowledge that she knows we are there.

She is gorgeous and so inquisitive, and seems fairly secure with us being there watching her.

It is the 4th July today, Independence Day in America, Caroline and I reminisce about being in New York 9 years ago today and watched the Independence Day celebrations. New York City was quiet during the day as it was a long weekend; the city was lovely to walk around while it was so quiet. In the evening we walked down To Franklin D Roosevelt Drive to watch the fireworks over the water, that evening New York City came alive again with thousands and thousands of people coming from nowhere to line the edge of the water, we sat and chatted to some of the NYPD who were keeping things in check for the evening, they were very friendly to talk to, we also chatted to the people we were standing next to. I think just like London there is nothing like a celebration to bring people together, otherwise on a normal day people just go about their business.

After about ¾ of and hour there is more crashing in the tree canopy, and finally another possum appears, this one is slightly smaller and a darker grey, he ventures towards our female possum who is enjoying our company and still mooching around us. Suddenly they have a spat and the little Possum chases the female away, it must be a male in search of food! That is the last we see of the female possum.

AT 10.00 we retire to the warmth of our bed, the night is less humid and although not too cold we feel the difference, outside we can hear the crashing around of the possums, they are not stealth like animals at all, they crash through the trees, they are having scuffles in the undergrowth that we are camped next to and every now and again we can hear them padding around our camp, looking for food.

Oh dear I remembered that I left the tub of Crunchy Nut Cornflakes outside, the lid is secure, but we know possums well enough by now that if they want it they will get it, I am so tired I cannot be bothered to go out of bed and rescue it, I imagine by morning there will be an empty tub and remnants of Crunchy Nut Cornflakes strewn around camp.

Wally
Hi to the two T's, The farm is good, in fact looks totally the opposite to when you were here. It is amazing what a bit of rain will do. Hope it keeps up although they are predicting another El Nino this year - oh woe is me! Hope they are wrong. A bit of bad news. Poor Wally is in hospital. I took him in this morning with a sore leg. It has been sore off and on for a fortnight. Anyway the short version is they were xraying and looking under anaesthetic this afternoon - may have a dislocation and could mean an expensive operation and long recovery. Then again it just might be torn ligaments. Don't know how he did it. He wont jump onto the Toyota but seems to manage to jump the fence and get in with Kimba for a bit of loving! Will keep you posted. I felt so sad leaving him at the vets. Love Helen

Oh Helen, Andy and I are so sorry to hear about Wally, please keep us posted, hmmm... I wonder what the vet will find, perhaps he strained himself while giving Kimba a bit too much of the love thing ;-). We would love to see the farm now except if you are expecting El Nino then we will stay away.... and its probably too cold down there, we are enjoying these lovely Darwin temperatures. The other dogs won't have the ever sensible Wally to look up to while he is out of action. Love C&A xx
