Day 59 - Coochin Creek to Aspley (North Brisbane)

We were awoken this morning by a scrub turkey on the roof of our caravan!!! We guess he was miffed at the fact that he couldn’t reach our rubbish bags as we’d hung them from the awning!! We were both awake and it was a bright morning so we got up and wandered down to the creek with a couple of hot drinks. Beautiful it was too, the birds singing, what we believe to be a Brahminy Kite high in the trees and a bright purple Azure Kingfisher flying nearby. The creek water is brown, you wouldn’t want to swim in it but there are notices telling you not to jump or dive in so people obviously do! We sit and wait for the kite to take flight and for the kingfisher to return but neither do so we return to camp to pack up. We’re heading to the Big 4 site north of Brisbane today so we can get showered, do the washing and pack the van up ready for storage.

Mary is up and we can hear Reggie yelling at the scrub turkey attacking his rubbish on the fence! We’re sad we won’t cross paths with these two further north but they will be travelling far quicker than us. We say goodbye and wish them well. Reggie isn’t sure they will spend another night here as they’d intended so they too might be packing up shortly.

We’re on the road and heading back to Brisbane on the highway. The journey only takes 45 minutes and is no problem. We’re on pitch 34 which is close to the amenities so in no time at all we’re showered and the washing has started. The site is close to what seems to be a busy road, you really notice things like this when you’ve come from the middle of nowhere!!!

We need to get a couple of things for the weekend and have long discussions about storage of the caravan versus paying the pitch fees and getting a taxi to the airport! It goes on for most of the day!! It’s basically $205 for 6 nights plus $80 for the taxi to and from the airport versus $150 storage plus $68.40 for 2 nights pitch. Whilst deciding we go and wash the car as it’s filthy! We have a good walk through the local shopping mall which is enormous and takes a good couple of hours and then it’s off to the car wash! This is hilarious as it’s a put your money in then watch the time countdown system! With either one of us working the machinery to pre-soak, foam wash, rinse, wax then spotless rinse and the other yelling out how much time is left it’s like something from ‘It’s a Knockout’ and we’re both laughing and soggy by the end of it all but the car is clean!

So, we’re all packed up ready for tomorrow having decided to put the car and the caravan into the storage unit at the airport then come back to the Big 4 site on Monday as we’ll store our left over food stuff in the site fridge!!

That’s all from us today, see you tomorrow in Melbourne!

Brahminy Kite
Yes, I think it is! a great spot - I don't remember seeing one on our Aus travels so gudonya! (We're doing quite well with the bird spotting from no. 50 - last night we saw two bull finches). We're pleased to see that it has stopped raining now - meanwhile we have a cloudless blue sky but no doubt it won't last! Love Mum and Dad K
