After the usual excellent breakfast we took the minibus to Sirince. They run every half hour and it is not far - not far as the crows fly (and there are a whole lot of crows here) but it's a steep and winding road up a mountain. Sirince is pretty - and takes advantage of this. It's full of little stalls selling honey, fruit wine and olive oil soap. There are also a load of restaurants and pansiyonlar and we were addressed in nothing but French. It's famous for being pretty, Greek and producing wine. A lot of the houses have been brought up and beautifully restored. Needless to say it is expensive to buy a restored place there are the best prospects have already been snapped up. Some attractive wrecks remain, but the atmosphere is too 'twee', it lacks a real community and it must be very difficult to get up that road in less than ideal weather conditions.
Which reminds me... Thunder woke us up this morning and it rained a bit on breakfast. Mostly though it has been fine and the temperature is 30 degrees now (just past five).
There was not much to do in
Sirince so, after walking round the village we caught a bus back down. We wondered round the one area of Selcuk we had not explored and found houses. The population here is 27,000 - not such a big place. Then we took tea by the station, watching the young storks flex their wings - there are three nests on the part of the aquaduct by the station. They were standing on the edge of the nests, flapping their wings and flexing their knees as if about to launch. Later this afternoon we saw young storks flying. A bit clumsily at first. I guess it's just that time of year. Then, for no apparent reason, a huge quantity of wheeling, cawing crows.
After tea we discovered our ferry tickets were not ready for collection so we went to a pide salonu where we had a peynirli pide and lamucun. Those are both described as 'Turkish Pizza' but are really quite different. The pide is like a roll of dough with cheese and herbs inside and the lacumun is more pizza-shaped but doesn't taste like one. It's coated with a thin layer of meat sauce. They taste much nicer than they sound. Our ferry tickets were still not ready so we came back to the hotel for a shower and some coffee and a rest on the balcony after which we returned to the tour agent where I insisted our ferry tickets be made available, whereupon they were. I think you need to be a bit more assertive here than you do in the UK. So, tomorrow we are off to Cesme - planning a not so early start, then down the coast road or 'pretty way'. It s not that far, two to three hours depending on road conditions.
