Pretty big update this one, so plenty of images. Since last update we had more ordinary weather as we headed south through the Redwood forests. These forests are special as they are the last remnants of old growth Redwood forest in the world. These are the tallest trees on earth reaching up to 380 feet.

Our next big stop was San Francisco, getting the bus into town we went over the Golden Gate Bridge. Finally the weather had improved a bit but the wind was quite cool. During the next couple of days we visited Alcatraz Island and walked a lot around the city and harbour getting the ferry back to our RV park each evening. One arvo/evening we drove up to the headlands for a view of the golden Gate bridge at night, very cool up there.

Further south again we stayed in a little town called Moss Landing on Monterey Bay. It has a harbour and estuary area called Elkhorn Slough and in it live Sea Lions, Sea Otters, Harbour Seals and a lot of birds.

We went on a pontoon boat trip into the estuary (called a slough here) and got closeup with the Sea Otters and seals. The otters are quite cute and are funny to watch play. They live in the water full time and sleep laying on their backs wrapped up in kelp to stop themselves drifting away. They groom their fur a lot and try and hold their hands out of the water as much as possible to keep them warm.

On our third day at Moss Landing we drove down to Monterey and visited Monterey Bay Aquarium. It is pretty impressive and on a pretty big scale, different from our aquariums at home with a focus on colder water species rather than reefs.

Our final full day in the motorhome was a days scenic driving south along the coast they call “Big Sur”. If is quite spectacular with high cliffs and rocky formations out in the water. We also saw a Northern Elephant seals on the beach which was a bonus.

Today we drove into LA and handed back the motorhome before getting on a flight to Anchorage in Alaska. We are now in the Puffin Inn Anchorage. Tomorrow we fly to Deadhorse (right at the very top of Alaska) to start our Alaskan trip.

As usual click on the images to get a bigger picture.
