Testing, testing... Mexico City

This is our first real blog! We have arrived safely after a tedious 11 hour flight to find we are about the only tourists in Mexico City right now, unsurprisingly. There are a few face masks and hand gel handed out at restaurants and public places, but so far no flu for us.

We have been here 2 days and did the Centro Historico yesterday (see the photos of the ruins, cathedral and Aztec dancers) including visiting some 700 year old ruins in the centre of the city, discovered only 30 years ago! We then went and joined what seemed like all of the 20m population at a park in the city to visit the zoo, generally get lost and, to add insult to injury, get sunburnt, oops!

Today we went to the Venice of Mexico City, which is not like Venice at all apart from they both have canals. We managed to avoid buying from the numerous boat based vendors selling ponchos, sombreros and tortillas, despite being the only tourists on the canals.

Joey is raving about the metro system, mainly cos it only costs 10p per journey, London eat your heart out! Also we have not had to wait for more than 2 minutes for a train and we have regular entertainment from people selling all kinds of things from Beatles Cds to Sudoku books. Rant over.

We´ve eaten probably a bit too much so far but who can refuse food that only costs 50p, admittedly it´s from a street stall and highly like to enact some "Montezuma´s revenge"!! I´ve also established I really don´t like the Mexican national dish Mole (not of the burrowing variety, it´s a mix of red and green chilis and chocolate but it just so does not work!).

Tomorrow we are off to see some more Aztec ruins outside the city and will probably be adding to the "Brit´s abroad" lobster red sunburn, as if we didn´t stand out enough already.

The internet connection here is pretty slow (its taken an hour to download the photos and write the blog - partly due to differenes in opinion on what to write mainly due to my few brief comments on the excellentness of the metro system), so we have not bothered trying to download the videos, as yet but they will be included at some point.

Mexico City is definitely jumping in at the deep end but our basic Spanish seems to be working so far.

Now we have worked out how to do this, we will try to make our next one a bit more concise (and interesting). Until next time Adios.
