Rome: 28th April - 4th May 2009

What could we possibly write about Rome that hasn't already been written? Everyone knows that their new stuff is older than what we in America consider old stuff, and their ancient stuff (Roman Empire, etc) is even older than the majority of the pyramids in the Yucatan.

Also, it's easy to get lost...and it's a great place to get lost, too. The streets are cobblestoned warrens leading from street cafe to the next gellateria and then the next piazza.

If you like Starbucks, you'll be in trouble in Rome. We didn't see a single one. The guidebook didn't warn us about this. Also, if you don't like Italian food, Rome is not a good choice. The Italians take Italian food very seriously. We ate very well.

The weather was also amazing. Perfect days...even when it rained, it was perfect, but that was rare.

Although it's not yet the peak season, there are tourists everywhere. Even I, as a tourist, was getting sick of the tourists. However, the presence of so many kept me from feeling underdressed. If we had been surrounded by Romans the entire time, I might have felt the need to invest in large aviator sunglasses and get some jeans with odd shaped back pockets along with shiny sneakers that use velcro tabs instead of laces. But, with so many Walmart fashions around, I felt ok.

In terms of sights, the first thing Rayma and I did was rent bikes and tour the major sites around the city. This took us about 6 hours or so of easy peddling. It was the highlight of our trip. I was surprised that there weren't more people on bikes, because this is the ideal way to get around in Rome.

We also had an amazing flat in Trastevere, which was a fantastic location. It was great to come back at the end of day and have our own place to chill in. Also the option of eating in has now become a very desirable thing.

Off to the north for Doug's first paragliding competition of the trip. More to come from Levico Terme...
