An Easy Day in St. Thomas . . .

I confess that I have not been making the most of my port time during the last couple weeks. Last week when we were in port I either took the day to just catch up on sleep and treat myself to such luxuries as lying in bed reading, or I just went out to cafes and enjoyed some good food along with fast internet. So this cruise, I’m more determined to actually get out and do something fun.

Last night we were in San Juan. I’m still so in love with that city. It was great to be back there. I just wandered through the winding stone streets and enjoyed the warm but fresh night air. Then I curled up in Starbucks and used Skype (a new discovery for me which I am now crazy about!) to call home. An easy but lovely evening before I had to return back to work.

Today we’re in St. Thomas. I wanted to get out and just do something, anything, that involved getting some sunshine. Jody (yes, we’re back on a ship together) called me in the morning to see what I was up to - at that point still sleeping. We made some last minute plans to go to Paradise Gate, a crew centre that is quite literally right on the pier. But there they have a nice pool and a patio, good food and a bar.

So I rolled out of bed and the two of us headed there. We had a lovely afternoon. Swam in the pool. One of the things I love most about working down here is the constant option to swim, though I haven’t been doing it enough. I floated around in an inner tube for awhile. We were in port with one of the Disney ships and Jody of course made friends with the crew members from their ship that were also spending a lazy afternoon by the pool. They were really nice and it was interesting to compare companies and stories. Our bartender hooked us up and we had cheap drinks all afternoon.

It was exactly the sort of relaxing afternoon that rejuvenates you for life back on the ship. But tomorrow is going to be even better - we’ve got a crew tour!
