What the.........
Took a shower with this dude...... Made it safely to Kampot on the bouncy bus, and fouind some digs..... Went for a walk around and soon discovered there was nobody at all in Kampot, nobody!
It's ok tho, i'd planned to go Trekking in Bokor National Park, 40km away, the only reason i picked Kampot. Went to book, and was told Bokor has been closed for about a year, and will be for about another 2 years as they are re-doing the roads. It was possible to trek, but this involved bribing, and it was way out of my league...... So after a few beers, in an empty bar on the first night, we booked a bus across to Sihanoukville, a very lively beach resort a few hours away. We were up early waiting for the bus, only for a 1984 Gold battered Toyota Camry to turn up. We were informed we were the only people who booked, should have realised, no one else was here, so this geezer drove us in his car. Very comfortable journey, no air con, but with the windows down we raced all the way there in little over an hour. And there was no getting out at the bus station
and having to fight the tuk tuk scrum to get to your guesthouse. He took us exactly where we wanted to go..... THE MONKEY REPUBLIC! The best guesthouse in Sihanoukville, and honestly, the best place i've stayed this entire trip.
Actually something major did happen in Kampot..... I was taking a shower, just shampoo'd the old barnet when i looked down and saw the scariest thing i've ever seen (steady), you'll see from the picture........... I quickly grabbed my towel and ran straight out, blinded by shampoo....CHRIST, that was nasty!!!! If anyone is opening a guesthouse, follow their example. We were greeted, shown to our bungalow, which was solid wood, 2 good beds, fan, safe, good bathroom & big veranda, plus it was set in gardens literally 10 yards from the bar. We were gven a free ice cold beer, and enjoyed a game of pool. The bar / restaurant is really good, and its also the livliest place for a drink in the resort. Its on 3 open plan levels, with pool table, tables, cinema room with hundreds of dvd's and a top floor hammock space.
Its a really cool place, as is the resort, a
place where you could easily spend a fortnight, and a lot of people do! Its not big, its pretty tiny, but has a great beach and atmosphere! We ate at our guesthouse first night, fresh Barracuda burger with home-made tartare sauce, it was soooo good!! Then, as city were live on at 9pm, we made our way to a bar we saw it was advertised. Got there, and the idiot realised he didn't have it after all, but still had the big sign outside advertising the game. I left, grumpy, and muttered some not nice things under my breath, only when i was a safe distance away, of course. Found another bar and watched the Chelsea game and played pool. Then the Liverpool game was on at 11.30, so moved to the hotel bar opposite us to watch. Got chatting to the owner, an Estonian Liverpool fan, and he kept the bar open for us to watch long after everyone else buggered off! Stuffy Scousers!!
Next day was a well earned day of doing nothing. Been ages since i've done that, every previous day has been non stop. So had a wander round the town, wandered the beach, and
found a little shop called The Boom Boom Room, which has all the latest albums for your ipod! Incidentally, if they opened a branch in Thailand with that name, they'd be a lot of dissapointed, ahem, gentlemen coming out of it... Anyway, 2 months without new music and i was going crazy, so got some new albums to keep me happy!
Had a BBQ that night at a local place, which included a Jacket Potato, get in, not had one in ages! Went back to the Estonians place to watch the United game!! Stuffy Reds!!!
Back at our bar, i noticed a flyer advertising The I-Ball Adventure Park, which included zip lines, lakes, and zorbing! Now, i tried to book zorbing in the UK, but because of ridiculous Health & Safety and insurance issues it costs £60 for one go!!! No such problems in Cambodia, for $10 you get a free ride to the park, which is a good 30 mins away, and then pretty much unlimited goes on everything!!!!
Got there to realise there was only 4 people at the whole place that day, including us!! Ah well, the Aussie owner welcomed us with a free
beer and we talked about the place. Then had a go of Zorbing, which was great, down the hill and over a rickety bridge he built. Check out the videos i've uploaded, if they work, probably not.
As there was only 4 of us, we all sat at the bar with the Aussie, and inevitably drank. Few beers, another go of the zorb, more beer, zip line into the lake, which was ridiculously warm, and, apparently, housed numerous leaches! More beers, and a final zorb, the booze adding a new element to flying down a hill in a big bubble!
We left the park, and had a quiet night, the day after we had 11 hours worth of buses to catch early on, so chilled out......with another Barracuda Burger, with 2 portions of homemade tartare sauce!!!
