So, last week, I’m sitting round the corner in the little café with the deckchairs out front when Paddy bimbles past and decides to plonk himself down for a beer. I sit and chat to Paddy for an hour and he tells me all about the wonderful world of boats, explaining that the RNLI build the BEST boats in the world and how one should never trust a lighthouse keeper who hasn’t got a beard yadda yadda yadda..when he turns to me and says ‘you’re Jon aren’t you?’. I have been living in the same house as this buffoon for the past 9 months and HE CAN’T REMEMBER MY NAME! I have now spent the past week feeling a lot like Homer Simpson in the ‘Who shot Mr Burns’ episode.
Last Tuesday I went to an acoustic night organised by one of the teachers at work. It was in a pretty tiny bar and the place was packed but it was a pretty good evening. There are a few people who play guitar at work (most of them play pretty well by the sound of things) and so for a couple off hours they bashed out a varied collection of
songs. One of the teaching assistants, Thao, got up to sing. She used to be my TA so I know she has a sweet voice, but it was painful to watch as she kept forgetting the words to ‘Life’, by Desree’. Still, made me chuckle as it reminded me of David Brent.
I’m even tempted to pick up a guitar and try and remember some chords so I can have a bash at playing the song from the Fall Guy sometime…
Last week Nick downloaded something called the pitchfork 500, 500 of the best tunes from 1976 to now. It’s a pretty comprehensive list so for the last week or so I’ve been working my way through it, you never quite know what you’re gonna get next, Metallica, Micheal Jackson or The Orb. In addition to this I’m also listening to a load of old Cars tracks, a lot of Lalo Schifrin, and some band called Trentmoller.
I also went to see Watchmen at the movies, which was damn good, though not as good as the comic. I don’t think people knew what to expect as there were a fair few walkouts during the cinema, maybe because
they were expecting something a little more like Spiderman/Hulk etc, or maybe because the VN censors had airbrushed out the naked Dr Manhattan’s dick…who knows. I also took Thu to see what I assumed would be a gentle comedy-Marley and Me. It wasn’t. As a story about a family dog it was largely devoid of laughs and ended with poor old Marley (who starts the movie as a Labrador puppy) being put down. Thu was in floods of tears by the end; I felt cheated of laughs; no- one had a good time. I was expecting Beethoven, but I got a film about euthanasia instead. Unrelated to this (I think, but it could have been a final nail) me and Thu broke up a few days later…I think we are both quite happy about this.
Last week I pratically crippled myself with a new pair of COMVERSE flip flops that I bough in district 5 for 60,000 dong. I wore them up the road as I went to get breakfast and by the time I got back twenty minutes later my feet are covered in cuts and welts. On top of this my feet were already suburnt from
playing golf in flip flops so for a few days last week I could barely walk and spent a most of my days off relaxing in my crib with the ant colony that I share a room with. I’m moving out of here on April 14th ( I was gonna stay, but have decided to check out living in a new part of the city) and I will be glad to leave my six legged friends behind. Apart from the fact that I can’t leave a can of coke for more than a minute without a horde of them going on a sugar binge they crawl in my bag and I end up taking them to work, they crawl across my glasses, they infest my laptop. and god knows what they do to me when im asleep...They live in the wall near the bathroom, I think, you can see a steady procession running back and forth from nest to crumb..it’s like watching Hannibal crossing the fucking alps, except they don’t want to sack Rome they want to eat it, or perhaps set up a new colony…
Finally, yesterday I was given some Class feedback- (students get to fill in
devil horns
for those who have just rocked... a customer satisfaction survey towards the end of every course. Overall it was pretty good but some kid commented ‘sometimes the teacher is angry and sometimes he’s not’, well that’s because sometimes you listen kids, and sometimes you don’t.
