of sicknesses

Edit Blog Post

Well, once again in a location that is not a part of TravelBlog´s locations.

Am in the Department of Carazo in the city of Jinotepe at a Spanish language workshop.... which is Spanish for ¨you´ve been in site for nearly 4 months so how´s your Spanish now?¨ Which means we have class every day from 8am'noon and 1pm'4pm.... which means we want to drink afterwards.

Unfortuantely, I seem to be getting sick a lot lately. Which is strange for me. Let me tell you about it.

First, the aforementioned sinus infection and subsequent antibiotic of amoxicilina.

So we arrived in Jinotepe Sunday early afternoon. Class early Monday morning. Staying with host families of new Health volunteers while they are visiting their sites. So we show up in a new city that none of us knows, and go to the first bar we see. Order litros of Toña. Tiny bar. Two tables and just enough barstools for the 5 of us. A Nican, sitting at one of the two tables, asks me if we are Americans, and offers to translate for us if we need anything. A few minutes later he buys us a few more litros, so Iowa and I go to talk to him. Name´s Eric. Lives in Jinotepe but goes to Miami every other year to live and work.

So we drink and talk with Eric. And he invites us to a soccer game. But first we have to go to his house to pick up his kids. Not sure how it works, because we probably would´t do this in the States, but we throw our luggage in the back of his car, pile in, and go to his house.

The man has MONEY. I mean lots and lots of money. Would be able to tell from the street, but it was a mansion inside. Forgot for a second that I was in Nicaragua. Then we went to the soccer game, Jinotepe vs Real Madriz. Me, being from Madriz and a norteña, was the only one in our section rooting for Madriz. We drank more beer.

Fun afternoon. Went to my host family´s house. Had a great dinner of fried chicken, rice, beans, and avocado. Woke up and had class all day. That sucked. And, my lips were on fire. Alergic reaction to something. Ate lunch. Class for the afternoon. And I started to feel like crap. Like, real crap.

After class yesterday everyone was going into Jinotepe. I wasn´t feeling so hott, so didn´t go with them, but then was bored so took a taxi by myself. And got hopeless lost in the market, no one would answer my phone calls, and I finally stumbled into a cyber where I proceeded to write a very depressing email to my wife and titan.

At that point, I seriously felt like I was going to either throw up or faint. So dizzy. So I left. And was going to catch a taxi home, when Simon happened to see me. They were all eating pizza at a bar next door. I went in. Ordered a sprite. And tried to ignore the feelings of doom that were pulsating from my estomago.

Went home with them. Bought water and drank and drank. Told my family I was sick and only wanted rice for dinner. They only had gallopinto, or rice and beans. I took one bite and was sure I was going to puke, so put the plate back in the kitchen, went to my room, took two benadryl, drank anouther bottle of water, took a cold shower, and fell into bed at 7pm.

The GOOD news is that I have been feeling better and better all day. I´m not in top shape right now, but no more diarrea and no more feeling like I would rather die. In fact, I am looking forward to getting pizza soon. Apparently the best pizza in all of Nicaragua. A different place than where they went last night.

So, think it was just something I ate. Thought I had a bug but think it might have been some kind of food poisoning. I was drinking tap water, but it´s potable and chlorinated. Still, gonna buy my water from now on.

Well, this was a pretty long and boring post. I´ll end it now.

Wonderful
It was just wonderful talking with you this (late) evening, Molly. I sometimes forget that you ARE reachable by phone. Hearing your voice is so "healing" for me! My worries and fears just sort of evaporate when I hear you. THEN I know that you're OK and doing well. Love you. Night Night!
