Mrs Macquarie's Chair
The awesome view from Mrs Macquaries Chair. This photo does it no justice! Mornin' All,
After about a million hours on the plane with a seat next to the toliet and perched next to a bloke with the tangiest feet in the world i have finally made it to Oz!!
We landed at 6am Aussie time and i was abso shattered as i didnt get much kip on the plane and either had people walking into my head when i finally nodded off or people queued up at the bogs nattering away! All that said the flight wasnt that bad, it was broken up quite nicely by stops every 7 hours, the first in Abu Dhabi (which was a well weird airport) and the second in Singapore. I got a train from the airport to my hostel as i was supposed to get a KST shuttle but nobody in the airport seemed to know that it existed.
I stepped out the train station and i couldnt believe it but it was bloody raining!!
When i got to my hostel, after standing in the wrong one for 5mins waiting to be served, i wasnt able to get to a room till 10am so had a few hours to wait but just
Australia Day
Aussie Day Celebrations at Hyde Park watched some rubbish Aussie TV for a few hours.
My first day in Sydney was a long one and after a much needed shower and change of clothes I got on my travels. A Geezer from the plane and myself went for a stroll and must have covered the majority of Sydney and even managed to stumble across the harbour bridge and opera house. Then onto Scruffy Murphys for a couple of pints of guiness for some liquid refreshment! (Note to anyone coming to australia the only place you'll find a pint glass is in an Irish Bar!)
My Second day (the 26th jan) was Australia Day and its a national holiday here so hardly anyone works and all the Aussies are draped in flags and Aussie hats etc to celebrate all that Aussies believe in and represent. I went to Darling harbour in the morning and had a breakfast and got involved with all that was going on down there then i strolled to the opera house and harbour bridge and listened to a bit of live music and also wandered to Hyde Park and listened to some music there. In the Evening i went to Darling
Pylon Lookout
The view of the CBD from the tower of the Harbour Bridge Harbour as they have a big show and loadsa fireworks over Ccockle Bay. The fireworks were awesome, a fair few hundred quids worth there, and after everyone had sung the national anthem about 50 times it was time to go home. there was 10's of thousands of people crammed into Darling Harbour for the night and was a well good atmosphere.
Ive also been to Mrs Macquarie's Chair which is the place where if you ever see a photo of the harbour bridge behind the opera house that is where it comes from. The photos dont do it any justice and it is well ace when you see it for real. This was the first day i seen any sunshine so thought it would be good to take in a few sights and sounds but its not a good idea for a pasty kid like me to decide to go for a sight seeing sesh at midday in the heat of the sun...no matter how much factor 30 you put on!! I walked back through the botanical gardens which were cool, but i must have rattled through about $100 worth of water as it was pouring out of me in sweat faster than i could drink it!!
The next day began on a bit of a painful note as in an attempt to get out of my top bunk without waking anyone up i slid out of my bed and landed on the my left foot flush on my toes and prob wasnt far off shattering every toe in my foot and i can feel it thats for sure and my big toe has gone blue! It neraly brought a tear to my eye...the pain was kinda like taking a 4 foot run up and kicking your coffee table barefooted, i definately had to bite my tongue or i think i would have woken the whole hostel and possibly a few others nearby! So thats the last time i go for a top bunk in a hostel!
Anyway, the rest of the day was pretty wicked, i walked to the harbour bridge and climbed one of the towers for the pylon lookout, theres a museum up there which tells you all about the making of the bridge and the view from the top is incredible, you can see pretty much the whole of Sydney and you are only bout 100ft below the top of the bridge so i could prob see pretty much the same as those doing a bridge climb and with a saving of about 100quid!
The following afternoon, after the sun had gone down a little bit i went to Manly beach...wasnt as fancy as i perhaps thought it might be but very nice nonetheless. Had a well tasty Pizza in a pretty highly regarded Pizzaria. It cost an arm and the best part of a leg but was well worth it and it deffo filled me up!
Next on my tour of Aussie beaches was Bondi. Since its the home of the bronzed and the beautiful i thought i'd fit right in! The day was about 35 degrees and pretty unbearable heat so i spent most of the day sat under the shade of a mahoosive rock drinking a stubbie or two and just watchin the fisherman and people strolling along the beach. Is a well nice place, with some good shops and loadsa good eateries and a good few fashionable bars where apparetly the likes of J-Lo and Britney etc go for a drink! I stayed there to watch the sunset and then back on the bus.
Anyway, i think thats everything worth reporting for the past week....hope alls well at home with everyone!
Laters,
Dunc
P.S. My batteries just ran out as i was uploading the photos off my camera so ill wack a few more photos on the next blog.
