Day 15 - Bolivia - Copacabana - Lake Titicaca

Not a very good journey as this was not a very comfy bus and we arrived into a cold bus terminal in Puno at 5am. Here we had to change buses and the next connection did not leave until 7am. This bus was to take us over the border into Bolivia so more forms had to be filled out. Just as we were catching up with our sleep we arrived at the border crossings. Here we had to queue up have our passports stamped by the Peruvian immigration and then we had to walk over the border to the Bolivian immigration to gain entry into the country.

The bus journey continues to skirt Lake Titicaca and an hour or so later we arrive in Copacabana. The time is now an hour ahead of Peru so we are only 4 hours behind the UK. Our hostel here overlooks the lake and is very comfortable so we decide to stay a couple of days.

We are getting tired of the overnight buses as we loose so much sleep that we end up spending the next day crashing out in our hostel room. It is a good way of saving money on accommodation but we miss out on visiting our new location as we are desperate for sleep as soon as we arrive.

Lake Titicaca is one of the highest navigable lakes in the world with an elevation of 3820m, 230km long and 97km wide. Copacabana sits on the southern shore of the lake between two hills. As it is also the wet season in Bolivia they get storms most days here. Heavy rain starts as soon as we arrive but a couple of hours later it is bright sunshine again due to the elevation of the town.

The altitude is taking its toll on us now and Oliver is suffering with a thumping headache most days. The air is a lot thinner and it is harder to get your breath when walking. Did not realise how this altitude can affect you so much will just have to put up with it for another week.
