Kuala Lumpur
The Petronas Towers So this blog comes with a warning...Barry and Rachel DO NOT READ if you think it might spoil all the surprises for your trip (we won't be offended!) but do know this...the food is AMAZING. Oh my goodness, we have spent all our time here munching. We need to get out before we spend all our money!!! But in slightly more detail now...

We were up and about early-ish today to get our bus to Kuala Lumpur. It was a a bit of a struggle as this was our worst night sleep EVER!!! Some people! But despite a sleepy start we jumped on the bus, snacks in hand, and dozed for the short journey to the border where we gained another stamp for our passports and swiftly continued into Malaysia. The drive to Kuala Lumpur took around 6 hours, so we arrived at around 1530. We navigated the Monorail and after briefly getting lost, found our delightful little hostel. We have a terrible habit of running out as soon as we arrive to see the main attraction - and so we dumped our bags and set off walking in the direction of the Petronas Towers. We had
no map, but as these are the 2nd tallest buildings in the world (and the tallest twin towers), it was actualy very easy - even for us! It was getting dark by now, and started to rain (it's still monsoon season), and so the towers looked pretty spectacular. After our walk, we grabbed some dinner and as we went to sleep, the mosquitoes decided to feast too.....all over H's body....

...so we woke up to Hayley being covered in itchy, irritating bites - very annoying! Daniel also had a few of his own, so our new odour is that of Tiger Balm! After breakfast, we aimed for the other main sight in KL's skyline, The Menhara KL. This is the 4th tallest Telecom Tower in the world, and we took the lift up the 270 metres to the observation deck, for the amazing view of the city. The architecture is crazy here, and it is surprisingly green for a city, so it was a great view. From here we had waited long enough to try the delights of the food on offer, which evidently is everything!! So we lunched on salad, chips, rice, chicken, and followed
this with a chocolate fondue! Gotta love these prices! We then had a rest, to build up our strength before going out to eat some more. We walked (some exercise to balance out the calories!!) to Chinatown Markets with a mission for Adam - our watch obsessed buddy back home. We did some hard core bartering/negotiating/pleading at numerous stores, and came away with a bargain (we hope?!). We also picked up some bargains for ourselves before coming back to the Golden Triangle, aka Home.

Up early today, as we were heading back to the Petronas Towers to join the queue for tickets to the SkyBridge - the 41st floor bridge linking the 2 towers. The system here is that you queue for a ticket for a specific time to come back and go up to the viewing area. We had 2 hours to kill; we knew what we had to do. Eat. Back at the SkyBridge a little heavier, we were slightly disappointed by the process. It was an hour session that included 10 minutes on the bridge. Those 10 minutes however were great. The view wasn't as spectacular as up the Menhara KL, but it
Kuala Lumpur
From the SkyBridge was still a sight worth seeing, and being up close to see the construction of the building was very cool. From there we took the Metro system to Merdeka Square, which is the centre of the colonial district here, and where Malaysia declared independence in 1957. We then caught a bus to Batu Caves. Batu Caves are 3 caves encompassing Hindu Shrines, which is reached by climbing 272 steps up to the cave mouth. On guard at the front is a 43 metre high Murga statue (big gold man!). The caves were very cool, and the community here is getting ready for the years biggest festival which will take place on Sunday. Part of this festival involves self-mortification e.g hooking themselves through skin and carrying offerings to the various gods, up to the shrines! 'Unfortunately', we're not going to see this...but thousands of people come every year so it is a shame that we will miss it by just a few days. We jumped on a bus back - somehow we manage to find the invisible bus stops - and decided to eat something. Amazing cookies. Amazing! We are now planning what's for dinner (writing a blog is quite draining!) - we think it's Japanese Culinary tonight.
It may seem that our last 2 destinations have been less busy - again apologies if this isn't always the most exciting blog - but we have some busy months ahead and, peculiarly, we find it easier to relax in the busy, big cities. We find it is easier to blend in more, and take it easy (and eat).
Keep the emails coming - it's great seeing the pictures of the snow (thanks Butch!). Apologies for the slow response to individual emails, we do read them all and find them very entertaining!
Love
D and H
