Edit Blog Post
Alright everybody this is going to be my first real blog where i'll tell everything. Until now i kinda just said a few things hear and there. So, now is the full tour so far.
Monterrey, Mexico, the climate:
Monterrey's climate is almost perfect. During the day the temperature had gotten into the mid to high eighties with just a little bit of cloud cover. This type of weather is phenomenal, However the students on campus still wear jackets and what not. But, there's the downside of this almost perfect weather. The yesterday the high was 64°F and the low got down to 46°F. I realize that for those of you back home you still don't sympathize with me because i believe you still have snow, according to weather.com you guys had a High of 45°F which didn't even reach my low. And you had a low of 17°F. But, I love everything here.
The scenery:
So, Monterrey, MX is basically in a bowl of mountains, every side of the city has mountains except the North. And when i say that the sides have mountains i mean that the sides ARE mountains. It's beautiful to look outside and see
the mountains staring at you right in your face. One mountain has a natural formation on the top of it which is a saddle in the mountain but it's a little different from regular saddles it is a little exaggerated. This saddle called, Cerro de la Silla, is the symbol of Monterrey even though it's technically closer to the city of Guadelupe. Also with mountains come foothills. The really interesting thing about these foothills is that they are covered with houses and neighborhoods. In Monterrey the city life stretches even up a little bit of the skirt of the mountain......I know I made it sound like a man at a "night club" but that's the way it is. Also, here in Monterrey all of the houses, shops, and offices are smooshed together as if to fit a ton of stuff into a tiny box.
History/Info of Monterrey:
The actual city of Monterrey is home to more than 1 million people. However, Monterrey and its surrounding area, which are considered to be part of Monterrey, houses more than 3.7 million people. This area includes San Nicolás, San Pedro, Santa Catarina and more. Monterrey had a giat park named Parque Fundidora.
This park was once Mexico's first steel manufacturing factory. Here they were the first to manufacture steel and other products. The factory was started in 1900 but shut down from Bankruptcy in 1986. Now in the park they have remnants of the factory as well as a ton of other things including museums of ancient history. One weekend i went to one of the museums and they had an Exhibit of Teotihuacán. It was awesome!
Daily Activities/Weekend fun:
So I've been here for almost a month now and i've only probably been in about half of Monterrey and its Metropolitan area. So I only have classes Tuesdays and Thursdays, but that means that i'm on campus all day long. My classes are Fluid Mechanics (in English) from 8:30-10 am, Deztrezas Comunicativas (Communication Strategies in Spanish) from 10-11:30 am, Cultura Mexicana (Mexican Culture in Spanish) from 4:30-6 pm, and Thermodynamics (in English) from 6-7:30 pm. In between my two groups of classes i have lunch, do homework, hang out with some of the awesome people that i've met, or just have some quiet time at the house. However, since i only have classes 2 days of a 7 day week
that means i have 5 days of whatever!! But, my whatever time during the week has been used for figuring out Visa stuff, or something about a class, or other random things. The fun is during the weekend or sometimes during the week. In Monterrey there is a club district called Barrio Antiguo where theres just a few streets, but they are completely lined with clubs everywhere. I have been to a couple, Ananna and Bar-Rio. At the clubs they have a DJ mixing music but also they have live music from House Bands. Also during the weekends i have gone to El Centro where it's just shop, shop, eat, shop and drop. I have had a ton of fun in El Centro I bought a Luchador mask there and had fun with that, and close to El Centro is El Coliseo. In El Coliseo they have luchador fights and they are absolutely amazing!!! Also close to these two is the Macro Plaza. Here there are tons of things to do. They have Cathedrals, the Government Building, lots of Museums, a River Walk, Food, and of course the Street Performers. Also with street performers they also have what i like
to call stop-light performers, that come out at a stop light in the middle of the street and do a trick or something and then right before the green-light walk past the cars looking for some money from the viewers.....yea strange. And I can't forget just the random things here like birthday dinners, bar hangouts, just hangouts, and last night my host brother had a reunion with his friends and they all came in pairs. There was about 15 other people at the house besides the normal. We had hamburgers and chips and avocado, and jalapeño slices, and drinks...you know the usual stuff. However , the Hamburgers were a liiiiittle different. Here they take the word literally. They have beef patties like the states just a little thinner, and of course there's cheese. But, here's where it is different, as the burgers are almost ready they put cheese on the burger and then since they're HAMburgers, they put on a slice of Ham. Yup HAMburgers. But they're actually really good, the normal toppings are lettuce, avocado slices, and Jalapeño slices. I enjoyed three of those bad baby's. It helped that i hadn't eaten in about 10 hours, I had lunch
at 1 and we ate at 11. Yea the parties here start late and end late, and that includes the clubs i mentioned earlier. So yea that's that.
Coming Up:
So that's been a sum-up of what i have done so far, let's look into the future a little bit. This weekend i am taking a trip to a city close to Mexico city. It's an ancient aztec city named Teotihuacán. Yes, I saw a museum earlier of this but now I get to go there! Also, for the american spring break my family is coming down and we're going to Puerto Vallerta, and Sometime later I will be visiting the Cancún area. So these are just a few trips of many others that you can look forward to reading about.
Applaud yourself! You're done! There's no more!! Es Todo!! Bien Hecho! Buen Trabajo!!!
