Seriously, check out the video for a quick trip back in time and a laugh. this one has got loads of crazy 80s dramatics...
When I was six, and in love with the song, 'Total Eclipse of the Heart'...I never paid much attention to the lyrics, or saw the video....I didn´t really think much about it. It was just on the radio all of the time. Then it disappeared from my existence, I never thought much about it again.

Now that we´re traveling in the south of South America (Magellanes, which is lots of fun) and this song is literally played in every establishment and on every mode of public transportation, I feel like I´ve gotten to reconnect with an old friend. I was just discussing this with Mark, when what should come on the radio in the cafe?!

Why this song? What is so special about it? In general, I've heard lots of old 80s music around...but this one seems to be a particular favorite. Or maybe my ears are just tuned in to hear its familiar melody...since I seemed partial to it back in the day.

If you get a chance to see the video, take it. It is pretty entertaining. I never knew.

Onto more traditional cultural discussions. We're in Punta Arenas now, preparing for a morning visiting

a penguin colony tomorrow morning, then touring the old mansions around town that previously belonged to wealthy sheep estancia owners. This is a pretty interesting town with quite the history. It was a booming shipyard before the opening of the Panama Canal, then prospered from natural gas well development. Supposedly its economy it no longer as strong and is slow behind the rest of the country, but it appears pretty well-off, with very clean parks, streets, and interesting tree formations and textures. I'm sure that Mark will have something more interesting to contribute besides pop culture questions and bland observations after tomorrow...

We take the tour of this mansion tomorrow. As you can see, Punta Arenas has some history to explore though. Supposedly, this residence was designed by a French architect to out-do the typical residences of Santiago, bringing in wallpaper from France and furniture from England.

This statue is in the main plaza, it has Magellan on top, with two native tribes-people at the base of the statue. Everyone wants to kiss or rub the foot for good luck...including sailors.
