Bao in HatBao in HatBao in Hat

Not Too Happy
When we were in Saigon, everyone said that Bao was not dressed warmly enough in his onesies. The weather there is sweltering and hotter than South Florida and he was used to only being in a thin shirt in the orphanage. Still, we got comments wherever we went and started dressing him in long pants. And everyone warned us of the cold weather once we reached Hanoi. So on his last day in Saigon, we gave in to the pressure and dressed him in a thick sweatshirt, thick pants and socks. Then they said "But no mittens? No hat?" Poor Bao sweated through it all day so that we could enjoy the perception that we were good parents. We knew he would be okay here for the brief one minute that we were outside getting into the airport taxi and the time to take to exit the taxi and enter the hotel, particularly as we would have him in the baby carrier, which provides an extra layer of padding. Imagine our surprise when we got off the plane and saw a young mother dressing her children for outside Hanoi in thick down jackets, heavy scarves and hats with pom poms and

sides to cover the ears. "Looks like they are about to have a snowball fight", Allen commented. And then we stepped outside at 10:00 p.m. and it had to have been in the 60's. But we once again have given into the pressure and now poor Bao is the not terribly proud owner of three hats, with varying degrees of warmth. We still get comments. Today it was that the 1/16th inch of exposed skin on the back of his neck was uncovered. Sigh....

Everybody has opinions
Cindy - you will find that everybody has opinions but the people who press their opinions on you most likely have never been in your exact situation. Those are the people you just smile at and hope they go away. People who you should listen to ask questions first then with some understanding share with you their life experience. - Uncle Rich

congrats!
Congratulations on Baby Bao. I occassionally read the travelblogs site when I get a chance. When I find a blog I enjoy, I'll go back to the beginning and read of all of their travels while in Viet Nam, which I did with your blog. My wife is from Viet Nam and we've visited 3 times since her coming to the US in 2001. I enjoy the blogs because I too, miss Vietnam and consider it my home away from Indiana, especially now with temps dipping below 0. I wasn't aware that the adoption doors to Viet Nam were open again? We've talked about adopting at one time, but heard the US couldn't adopted there. :( Anyhow, congrats once again and God Speed on your travels. Thank you for posting on travelblog. -david vnphotogallery (dot) com
