American Village
America has Chinatown, Japan has American Village. What does China have?? As the famous Whitesnake song slithers thru my head (get it...whiteSNAKE..slithers...get it..get it) I sit here typing in a hostel in Taipei Taiwan. Thus far I have been in either America or Americanized Japan with assorted friends. I was so nervous climbing onto the plane in Okinawa. Its always a strange feeling going to a country where not one person knows who you are. Its lonely and invigorating and a challenge. The only person I have to depend on is myself. I always make it thru the loneliness but its still a part of my trips.
Actually let me go back a couple days. I spent my last couple of days in Okinawa mainly hanging out with Marc on base. We were saving our energy for New Years Eve. When the evening finally came Ashley, Marc, Kim, Chris and Daniel with a few others all gathered for some food at a tepanaki restaurant then headed to see Marc and Daniel's new apartment which, by the way, kicked SOOO much booty. Perfect location and gorgeous views. They have a third bedroom which got me thinking....hmmmm, could I live in Japan? We made way to Ashley's friends house and played some Scene
A lil tipsy
Can you tell who the craziest is? It and started our drinking. Girls vs Boys showdown commenced and, with 1 minute til we had to leave for the official midnight celebration, the girls beat those boys. We got to American Village at 1145 or so. American Village is basically the Chinatown equivalent. We found a balcony and enjoyed the countdown, kisses and fireworks. It was nice celebrating with Americans yet hearing the countdown in Japanese. We went to a karaoke bar and Marc was nice enough to play three Britney Spears songs, a Mandy Moore AND a Paris Hilton song, :-) I rocked it out like I usually do when Britney lyrics are put in front of me. I enjoyed Ashley's singing and “enjoyed” Marc's singing. So to sum up combine karaoke, vodka, American village fireworks, “laughing into the mike” and sexy marines it equals “Happy New Years!!!!”
I dont know if I was sad to leave Japan or just really nervous to start the actual alone part of my journey but New Years Day was a little tough. A rib had popped out of place so that was causing some pain and it was uber cloudy and chilly so that didnt help but I was
just down. I packed my bag and Ashley Marc and I rushed to the airport. They came in and sat with me til my flight. I hugged them and told them I loved them then headed off to Taipei.
Taipei is a great city. I expected a dark desolate city not the thriving bright and efficient city it is. The public transportation is easy, everyone is friendly and happy to help. I walked into a hostel room full of people from Singapore. Everything I said that was barely funny they would laugh so loud and sincerely. I felt the way Im sure a comedian feels. Good roomies to have. This morning I ventured out into the city to go to Taipei 101. The tallest building in the world complete with the fastest elevators in the world it was well worth the 15 or so dollars it took to get up it. Now Im in the hostel watching Gilmore Girls. Im exhausted and am all about the cozy clothes and quiet day. I will get myself a good dinner tonight. Anyway that is my update for the day. Nothing too interesting but an update nonetheless. Happy New Years everyone!
