After a 12 hour bus ride, that I think we managed to get some sleep on, we arrived in San Cristobal. It was gray and drizzly when we arrived at about 8:30am - bit of a shock after the heat of Mexico City! We found our hostel and dumped our bags, had a shower and some breakfast and headed out to explore.

By this time the sun had come out, but we still had our jeans and fleece jackets on! Saw the cathedral, watched a local dancy thing in front of it. We went looking for malaria tablets as had read that Palenque, our next stop, had lots of mozzies and Lorna had only been given tablets for South America. While pharmacy hopping we saw most of San Cristobal, the churches here were a bit more varied. My favourite was the blue and white one. We went for a walk up a hill to a temple which gave views over San Cristobal. Not really much to do here, and in the afternoon it poured with rain and was freezing cold! Lorna went to bed as was getting over a cold so I sat downstairs and watched a DVD. It was that cold even the wee Mexican hostel man was cold and put the fire on which was much better.

The next day, I think we´re up to the 2nd of December now we have no concept of days!, we got the bus to Palenque, which according to my footprint guide book "is a friendly, colourful little town whose sole reason to exist is to accommodate the tourists heading to the ruins nearby" Pretty good description really. We found the worst hostel as it was soooooo noisy at night cos the glass windows didn´t shut and there was no front door. The guns and bells going off at 5am in the Zocalo sounded like they were outside our door. Anyway, we were near the Zocalo so went out for dinner with an aussie girl in the dorm room with us and had a mojito which is made with straight rum here, no mixer!

On the 3rd we got up early and went to the Palenque ruins which were really cool. They are in the middle of the jungle so feel really different to the ones at Teotihuacan. You could hear different birds but we didn´t see any interesting ones. You could still wander over most of the ruins, except one of the Temples cos they were fixing it.

That afternoon we went on a tour to Agua Azul and Misol-Ha which were amazing. Misol-Ha was a waterfall, and you could walk behind it and up into a cave were there was a wee waterfall and some bats. Agua Azul was a 7km run of waterfalls and we had a swim there.
