With only 5 days left before needing to be in Shanghai we still had a lot of things to pack in. There was the Panda Breeding Centre at Chengdu, and a 3-4 day boat trip on the river Yangtze through the Three Gorges and a final day to travel overland to Shanghai. It was obvious that a 18 hour train journey over the mountains just wasn't going to work. So we decided to take a 1.5 hour flight instead bound for Chengdu - the downside is you have to pay twice as much as you would for the train.

After a couple of lengthy bus rides (with no suspension) from the Airport we arrived at the youth hostel called Sims Cosy. Tip: Try to get their leaflet from another cities hostel to give you excellent travel guidance on getting there. Sims Cosy is run by a couple (from Japan and Singapore) who are experienced backpackers themselves and they have managed to create a fantastic place to relax in the City for weary travellers. The place has excellent services, the staff are friendly and the food is good and reasonably priced. They have a garden and a small range of animals - chickens, rabbits and pigs that live there. The double bedroom we stayed in had a huge bed and loads of storage for your gear plus there was a small bowl of fruit waiting for us too! The hostel like most buildings in Chengdu has the scars of the earthquake that tore through the Sichuan province and although we didn't feel any there are apparently still small after shocks even now.

Tomorrow we go to visit the amazing Panda's......

April 2009 Stay at Sim's Hostel, Chengdu
My friend, Shawn from Sydney, Australia and i from Kuala Lumpur stayed at Sim's Cosy Garden Hostel, Chengdu from 3 to 7 April 2009. We enjoyed the service. The room rate was reasonable. Its food served was good. But above all, the proprietor, Mr. Sim, is a great guy - he really cares for his guests' comfort and wellbeing while staying at his hostel. I highly recommend this hostel, KC Leong
