The Parque Nacional Iguazu is just fantastic. As well as the falls (over 250 of them) there´s 1550 sq km of rain forest. They´ve created 3 trails all around the most magnificent of the falls with the minimum impact on the environment...it´s impressive.
We start with Passeios Superiores, which takes you on catwalks above the falls so you can look down over the incredible views and get a taster of what´s in store. Then it´s on to the Passeios Inferiores, which despite it´s name is even more impressive. It runs along the bottom of the falls and you can get really close...and wet! We decide we want to get even closer and sign up for a speedboat ride which takes you right up to the falls...we´ve had the best bath in the world in Bolivia, now this has to be the best shower in the world! We get absolutely drenched in seconds...the spray makes it a complete white-out and my laughter is hysterical. Exhilerating is an understatement.
We save the best for last...the 3rd trail is a series of suspended walkways that leads you from a quiet point over the Rio Iguazu up to the Garganta do Diablo (the
Devil´s Throat). The river gradually turns more violent underfoot as it approaches the horseshoe-shaped canyon. The roar as 13,000 cubic metres of water per second plunge 90 metres is deafening. We´re stood right on top of this magnificent, frightening spectacle completely awestruck. I feel really emotional, as well as the exhileration and excitement that the falls inspire, I´m once again overwhelmed by how lucky I am to experience this.
We´re soaked as the spray forms massive clouds above us and rains down. There are rainbows as we peer down into the white abyss watching the swifts on their seemingly suicidal swoops straight down as they defy the odds to catch insects mid air. Watching all that water swelling and tumbling over the edge is hypnotic and we linger for a long time, absolutely dazzled.
