Walking to School
Crossing the river walking to school. Winter has arrived! Hello all,
Just a quick note to update everyone on the happyhaps of Austria. Woke up today to snow on the ground, which was pretty exciting. I also had my oral exam in my German class for international students, which went well. We went in groups of threes, and I was with Elena from Espain (as she says it) and Anna from Hong Kong. We've had a few articles so far this semester and are reading a book right now, and so we could have been given the topic of any of them to chat about, and naturally, my group got the one that none of the groups wants to talk about: Jörg Haider. He was the radical politician from Carinthia, whose funeral was on the day I was in Klagenfurt. Anyways, we had a little chat about Jörg and it evolved into a conversation about the politics in our home countries and then from there the education in our home countries, so it was overall pretty good. We also got our tests back from last week, on which I got the European equivalent of a C, but oh well, I'm not too torn up about it. There was stuff
Stadtpark
City park covered in snow. on it we'd never learnt and I'd never known, so what can ya do?
Now, for the reason for the title. Libor spoke to his mother today (they have a standing date on Tuesdays) and this past week was his sister, Lenka's, birthday. She just turned 7. His mom gave him an update on the latest news in the CR. He came into my room after talking to her and said, "So, guess what my sister wanted for her birthday, the only thing she asked for." I didn't really have any clue since I've never met the girl, so I said, "I donno, a toy?" He responded, "A dictionary." I was confused and didn't really get what he meant, and he said, "èesko-anglický, anglicko-èeský." His sister had asked for a Czech-English dictionary, and that was the only she wanted for her birthday, because she's really excited for us to go there for Christmas so she can talk to me. She just started learning English this year in school, as well as German, so she's very excited to try out her German with Libor and me and especially her English with me. I told Libor that was perfect, she and I can sit in the corner and I can talk to her in my minimal Czech that I've learnt so far and she can talk to me in English or German. I might just die from the cuteness.
Anyways, that's about it. Went to "Neubaugassekino" last night with Libor and Olga and watched Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights so Libor and I could study some moves. Olga might come one of these times to dance with us, too, which means she'll put us all to shame since she's from Spain and thus is the source of Latin blood .
Also found out a more certain itinerary for my trip to the Czech Republic. Libor has to stay in Graz until the 17th for a class, which is perfect since I have a 15 page paper to write. We get out of school on the 12th, and so I'm going to use the space inbetween to get a lot of work done . On the 18th, we're going to catch the really early morning train up to Vienna and wander around there, see the Christmas market and see how the city is for Christmas. From there, a few of our Czech friends tipped us off about the cheapest way to get to the CR, and that is to take the intercity bus from Vienna to Brno, the city Libor goes to school in, which is about 6euro. We're going to go up to Brno, which is also where his grandfather lives, and spend a night or two there at his grandfather's. He wants to show me the city and he had some things to do in Brno anyways, so it should be really cool. From there, we're going to drive up to his town, Linhartice, which is right outside of Moravská Třebová, a city about 20 minutes from the Polish border. I'm pretty excited, it should be a great time and really cool to see everything and hang with the locals.
That's about it for now, though.
Nazdar!
